Congressional's Model UN in New York City
Pictured Above: Congressional's Model UN in front of the United Nations before the Opening Ceremony. Congressional's Model UN traveled to New York on Friday accompanied by Mr. Ahlborn and Mrs. Mullineaux to attend the Global Classrooms International Middle School Model UN Conference. After a smooth trip to NYC, the group was energized for a great conference. The event includes teams from 14 states and 9 countries with several hundred-thousand youth involved in MUN worldwide annually. "The Model UN program is unparalleled in that it used Rules of Procedure that closely represent how the UN function daily; it provides unique access to UN officials and diplomats prior to and during the conference, and each delegation is represented by students from all over the world." (Letter from United Nations Foundation President Timothy E. Wirth) Arnav Simha represented Congressional School at the conference last year, and his leadership has provided the stimulus to grow our Model UN into a team of 22 students this year. We look forward to the rising 8th graders from this year's team as they lead the group next year. |
Students Shine in Disney's Mulan Jr. Production

This year's Spring Musical production, Disney's Mulan JR, was a spectacle of color and showcased some outstanding student performances. Under the direction of faculty member Derek Bowley, the production took many months of hard work starting with auditions and casting of students in leading roles. The annual spring musical is the biggest student production each year, involving students from grade 1 through 8 in a variety of roles including singing, acting, back stage crew, lighting, sound, and set design and construction. The production also relies on the support and expertise of many parents, faculty and staff.
On Friday last week, the cast and crew performed a full dress rehearsal in front of students, and on Saturday evening gave a stellar performance in front of Congressional families, friends and special guests and wowed the audience.
View the attached program for a complete list of production credits. |

Students Prevail in Faculty vs Staff Basketball Game
| Click image for more photos |
A large group of teachers and staff members turned out to participate in the Faculty vs. Student basketball game this week, and while they made an impressive showing, they just couldn't pull off a win. Girls Varsity Team player Rebecca Davila scored a basket to give the students a 4 point lead and then stole a pass in the closing seconds to seal the victory. The final score: 47-43.
While the faculty didn't win the showdown, they did make a gallant effort and the score remained close throughout the game. Students from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8 watched and enjoyed cheering for their teachers and fellow student players.

Chinese Cultural Assembly
What is it like to be a performer in the Shen Yun production? Students found out first-hand this morning when a former Shen Yun performer talked with them during an assembly. After a presentation by Congressional's after school Chinese program teacher, Amy Xue, students learned about some of the props used by the Shen Yun dancers and listened to a performance of two traditional Chinese songs.
Congressional's after school Chinese program teacher, Amy Xue, is extending a special invitation to Congressional families and alumni to attend a Shen Yun performance at the Kennedy Center Opera House through April 1st. This special invitation includes access to the lounge during intermission (subjected to space availability), as well as a matching grant to Congressional, equivalent to 20% of the ticket proceeds. All ticket proceeds will be combined with those from the Gala & Auction, and the Golf Tournament (May 18) to be used for upgrades and enhancements to playgrounds benefitting students from Bright Beginnings through Grade 8. At the performance on March 31st, there will be a special tribute to Seth Ahlborn as guests gather in the lounge during intermission.
To purchase Shen Yun tickets with the special offer, please go to DC.TicketingBox.com, and enter promotion code CONGO. Please contact Amy Xue at [email protected] or 703-298-4856 if you have any questions.
