The Edge is a weekly media scan that is distributed by the Iowa Substance Abuse Information Center (ISAIC).  Our goal is to share relevant information about substance abuse, problem gambling and associated mental health issues with professionals in Iowa.

If you have articles of value that you'd like to share with others across the state, or feedback regarding the content, format, or method of distribution, please email them to Emily at the address below.

 New ISAIC Website to Launch!
The new ISAIC website will launch this week!  We've worked hard to make it visually appealing and user-friendly.  Access to our ISAIC Store for pamphlets, online reservation system for media items, and information specific to professionals are easy to access at the click of a button.  We have rolled our Recovery Iowa website into our redesigned site.  The web address for all ISAIC information will remain the same www.drugfreeinfo.org

Here is a revised Search Help "cheat-sheet" to help you access our items once the site goes live.

As you explore the site, please provide any comments or suggestions you have to me directly at blommee@crlibrary.org

Thank you!

The Legal Status of Poker: Skill Kills Lady Luck
THE argument that poker is a game of skill, not luck, is not exactly new. Nor is it one that any poker player, serious or casual, would dispute. Luck certainly plays a part in poker, just as it does in, say, baseball. But it is not the dominant force, as it is in a lottery (once described as the only game in which your chances of winning are not greatly increased by playing). The most elegant illustration of the role of skill in poker was provided to me a couple of years ago by...

The social network has allowed gaming apps which are centered around gambling before, but the launch of Bingo Friendzy is the first one which allows people to stake real cash.  More gambling games are set to launch in the coming months, with slot machine games making their debut in "weeks".

Democrats, GOP collude to lure people into gambling

Here's a quick election-year quiz: Name one issue where Republicans and Democrats consistently agree, no matter where they live. And if you get this question wrong, we can go double or nothing on the next one....

Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.

Medical Centers Begin Training Programs For Specialists On Addictions
Despite its prevalence and impact -- addiction is linked to more than 70 diseases or conditions and accounts for a third of inpatient hospital costs, according to CASA -- the subject is rarely taught in medical school or residency training. Of the 985,375 practicing physicians in the United States, only about 1,200 are trained in addiction medicine, a scarcity of skills that poses a "formidable barrier" for patients, CASA concluded.

Treatment length and outcomes among adolescents: a secondary data analysis
Adaptations to evidence-based substance abuse treatment programs may impact their effectiveness. A qualitative study of MET/CBT-5 implementation in community agencies treating adolescents found that the majority of the agencies made adaptations and that the most frequent adaptation was to provide more than five treatment sessions.

Do cultural and linguistic competence matter in Latinos' completion of mandated substance abuse treatment?
Increasing evidence suggests that culturally and linguistically responsive programs may improve substance abuse treatment outcomes among Latinos. However, little is known about whether individual practices or culturally and linguistically responsive contexts support efforts by first-time Latino clients to successfully complete mandated treatment.
