Problem Gambling:

You're cut off! Can casinos identify problem gamblers?
The bartender decides when a drinker should be cut off, based on how many drinks he has had and how he is acting. But, unless a gambler is suspected of cheating, we might not see similar behavior from a dealer in a casino. Why not? Unlike problem drinking or drugging, problem gambling does not produce specific, easily observable, and predictable behavior. This week, the WAGER reviews a study that tested whether casino employees could use their knowledge of regular players to identify whether these players had gambling problems (Delfabbro, Borgas, & King, 2012)

Learn More About College Gambling
Did you know that 75 percent of college students have gambled in the past year? CollegeGambling.org, a free online resource of the National Center for Responsible Gaming, includes the latest research and resources designed to help college students, parents and university administrators learn more about this issue.

NY Times: Poker Is More a Game of Skill Than Chance

In a ruling that goes to the heart of what it means to play poker, Judge Jack B. Weinstein tossed out the conviction and vacated the indictment of the man who ran that gambling business. The judge's reason: poker is more a game of skill than a game of chance, so game operators should not be prosecuted under the federal law the prohibits running an illegal gambling business.

Program Reduces Recidivism Among Men With Co-occurring Disorders
A modified therapeutic community program designed by NIDA-supported researchers helped male parolees with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders adjust to living in their communities. In a prior study, men who had participated in the program while incarcerated were only half as likely as others who received standard prison care to be sentenced for a new offense during their first year out.

Refresher: SAMHSA's Guiding Principals of Recovery
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA) recognizes there are many different pathways to recovery and each individual determines his or her own way. SAMHSA engaged in a dialogue with consumers, persons in recovery, family members, advocates, policy-makers, administrators, providers, and others to develop the following definition and guiding principles for recovery.
