Research Update: The Social Network of Pathological Gambling 

What is a "social network analysis" of gambling disorders and responsible gaming? The phrase might evoke images of Mark Zuckerberg in a hooded sweatshirt, or the Oscar-winning film about the creation of Facebook. In reality, a social network analysis (SNA) is a method that researchers use to study how social connections effect behaviors, such as problem or pathological gambling.   

 

Sioux City Council changes zoning to allow casino 

The City Council on Monday approved changing municipal code to allow a gaming facility in the downtown area. The agreement creates the zoning framework for creating the city's first land-based casino.

National Survey of American Attitudeds on Substance Abuse XVII: Teens
Nearly 9 out of 10 (86 percent) of American high-school students say that some classmates are drugging, drinking and smoking during the school day, according to the National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse XVII: Teens, the 17th annual back-to-school survey conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University (CASAColumbiaTM).

Benefits of Combining Treatments for PTSD and Substance Abuse

A new study shows people who are treated for both post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse have improved PTSD symptoms, without an increase in severity of substance dependence.

 

University of Iowa moves up to No. 2 party school 

The University of Iowa's renown - or infamy, depending on your perspective - as a party hotspot continues to grow, in spite of UI and Iowa City Council efforts to curb underage and binge drinking.UI vaulted to the No. 2 spot of the Princeton Review's annual top 20 party schools list for 2013, which was released Monday  

 

Two-Drug Combination Could Help Treat Cocaine Addiction, Rodent Study Suggests
A combination of the drugs naltrexone and buprenorphine might be an effective treatment for cocaine addiction, a study in rats suggests. The study found the drugs made the animals less likely to take cocaine compulsively, while preventing significant withdrawal symptoms.

Few Teens With Prescription Opioid Use Disorders Receive Treatment
Researchers who previously found that about 1 percent of adolescents report symptoms of abuse or dependence on prescription opioid analgesics have now estimated that fewer than 12 percent of teens with these problems receive any treatment at all.
