Community-based residential rehabilitation programs are only helpful in the short term for methamphetamine users, a new study suggests. Shorter detoxification programs are even less successful,Reutersreports.

A pilot program in Ohio is using fingerprint scans in an effort to fight prescription drug abuse. Patients submit to a scan before seeing doctors in one hospital system, while several pharmacies are using the scans for patients filling prescriptions. Participation in the program is voluntary.

Several recent studies are shedding light on why athletes may be more prone than the general population to substance abuse, eating disorders and suicide. The findings may have implications for athletes retiring after the Summer Olympics.

ubstance abuse treatment centers say they expect to see increased drug and alcohol abuse in the wake of the shootings in Aurora, Colorado, according to The Denver Post. Mental health experts are seeing an  extensive need for trauma counseling.

August 17, 2012, 8:30am - 12pm in Omaha, NE.  This workshop is intended to provide compulsive gambling counselors, behavioral health and addictions professionals with a basic understanding about how to work with family members of gamblers in the practice of counseling.

Harm Reduction Training
August 17, 2012, 12:45 -4pm, in Omaha, NE.  This workshop is intended to provide compulsive gambling counselors, behavioral health and addictions professionals with a basic understanding about how to use harm reduction as an intervention strategy in their work with those who want to decrease the consequences of their behavior or addiction but do not want to stop completely.
