Problem Gambling: Noteworthy Articles and Studies

Now in its ninth year of publication, Responsible Gaming Quarterly (RGQ) is one of the leading international resources for news and analysis of issues surrounding gambling disorders, counting nearly 1,300 gaming industry representatives, treatment providers, academics, regulators, members of the media and government officials among its subscribers. Iowa Gambling Treatment Program highlighted on page 10.
People who engage in Internet gambling, such as online poker, are more likely to use alcohol and marijuana than those who gamble offline, a new study suggests.
If Facebook were an actual street, it would give the Las Vegas Strip a run for its money. Slot machine maker WMS Gaming announced Wednesday it was joining Zynga, HollywoodPoker, International Game Technology's DoubleDown Casino and dozens of other social gaming companies with its own product for Facebook's free play options. | Opinion: Anti-smoking effort for substance abusers is 'anemic' A frequently cited paper in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that people with either a mental disorder or substance abuse problem consume 44% of all cigarettes smoked in the U.S. Our efforts to address smoking in these populations is anemic.
Popular Synthetic Drug Simple to Obtain From China, Experts Say The popular synthetic drug methylone, a key ingredient in "bath salts," is simple to order online from China. "It's probably easier than buying a case of wine online," said Richard Yarow, an attorney for a man who pleaded guilty to assisting one of the importers wire money to China.
Ohio Uses Fingerprint Scans to Fight Prescription Drug Abuse A pilot program in Ohio is using fingerprint scans in an effort to fight prescription drug abuse. Patients submit to a scan before seeing doctors in one hospital system, while several pharmacies are using the scans for patients filling prescriptions. Participation in the program is voluntary.
