Responsible Gaming Education Week : July 30th - August 3rd, 2012
RGEW, held annually during the first full week of August, was created by the AGA in 1998 to increase awareness of problem gambling among gaming industry employees and customers and to promote responsible gaming nationwide.  The AGA and the entire gaming industry realize that education is essential to promoting responsible play and increasing awareness of gambling disorders, and RGEW provides gaming companies with an opportunity to expand on work they do every day educating employees and patrons about the issue.

Gambling is an 'adult activity': Expert warns youth lured by so-called easy money
Countless people flock to casinos, card tables and lottery kiosks, lured by the prospect of victory and pocketing a windfall. But a leading youth gambling expert says games of chance are anything but child's play.

Facebook has been accused of turning youngsters into gambling addicts with an explosion of Las Vegas-style casino games on the social networking site.

 

Iowa gambling casinos post record revenue in fiscal 2012 

A new casino in northwest Iowa and a return of consumer confidence among Iowans spending their entertainment dollars closer to home helped Iowa's state-licensed tracks and casinos post their best financial year ever with nearly $1.466 billion in gross adjusted revenue.

Genetics can help determine whether a person is likely to quit smoking on his or her own or need medication to improve the chances of success, according to research published in today's American Journal of Psychiatry.

Medication for Alcoholism: An Expanding Field
The reasons why medications to treat alcoholism are not more widely prescribed are complex and this is an exciting time in the treatment of alcoholism, because the field of medication treatment for alcohol dependence is expanding into the arena of personalized medicine.

Obama Signs Legislation Banning Synthetic Drugs

On Monday July 9th, President Obama signed legislation that bans synthetic drugs.

The law bans harmful chemicals in synthetic drugs such as those used to make synthetic marijuana and "bath salts".

 

Something to cry about: Harsh physical punishment and future risk for drug and alcohol use disorders  Children who experience corporal punishment are at higher risk for later aggression, delinquency, and overall poor mental health, including substance abuse/dependence.
