Is Myth Busting an Effective Tool for Prevention?
In many of the prevention programs at RGC, we attempt to dispel myths and challenge beliefs to help people make better decisions if they choose to gamble. Myth busting is problematic, though, because not all beliefs are created equal.


The Gambling Commission is investigating the rise of social gaming in a move that could slash the value of online operators. Companies that make games for social media sites such as Facebook are under scrutiny as fears grow over the increased blurring between social gaming and gambling for money.

 

  

Gambling on College Campuses: Case Studies

While the vast majority of college students who are of legal age to gamble do so responsibly, the most recent research estimates that 6 percent of college students in the U.S. have a serious gambling problem that can result in psychological difficulties, unmanageable debt and failing grades. Youth Gambling is Not a Game PSA:  In the United States and Canada as many as 15.3 million 12--17 year olds have been gambling with or without adult awareness or approval, and 2.2 million of these are experiencing serious gambling-related problems. Yet, there continues to be little public awareness or concern about the extent, or the potential hazards associated with juvenile gambling. National Survey on Drug Use and Health -- July 2012
Monthly Variation in Substance Use Initiation Among Adolescents: Estimates of substance use initiation,
also known as first-time use, provide an important measure of the Nation's substance use problem and can help identify patterns of substance use.


Pregnant women who are being treated for heroin dependence with methadone can be persuaded to reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke through monetary incentives, a new study suggests.


The increase in prescription drug abuse is fueling a rise in heroin addiction,NBC Newsreports. A growing number of young people who start abusing expensive prescription drugs are switching to heroin, which is cheaper and easier to buy.


New, Bilingual Web Resources Help Hispanic Families Prevent and Address Drug and Alcohol Use Among Teens  The Partnership at Drugfree.org today announced the launch of new tools for Hispanic parents and families, accessible at "HablaConTusHijos," a free, bilingual (Spanish/English) online resource to help Hispanic parents who are struggling to address drug and alcohol abuse by their children.
