Problem Gambling:
Noteworthy Articles

Fabulous magazine TV ads banned for 'linking gambling to seduction'
A TV ad campaign for News International's Fabulous magazine has been banned for linking sexual attractiveness to gambling success.

As gambling expands overseas and Las Vegas diversifies as a tourist destination, casino operators are looking to online gaming as a way to attract new customers and increase profits.

But thanks to changing regulations and improvements in computing and mobile technology, you can now contrive to bid your money farewell from the comfort of your own home. Interactive gambling-a category that encompasses sports betting, poker, casino games, slots and other such wagers placed from a home computer, interactive TV or mobile phone-makes up an increasingly important part of the global gambling market.

Approved by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp (OLG), the ad invites the viewer to abandon the tedium of friends and family - to head out for a night of fun and frolic at Casino Rama. Better to gamble the night way than spend time at home.

Substance Abuse:
Noteworthy Articles
 and Studies
SAMHSA releases new reports on drug use
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) today released two reports regarding substance abuse. The first indicates that youths between the ages of 12 and 17 are far more likely to start using most substances during the summer than during other parts of the year. The second report of data from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) system shows that the rate of increase in drug-related emergency department (ED) visits slowed from an average annual rate of 18.2 percent in the years between 2005 and 2008, to an average annual rate of 6.1 percent in the years 2009 and 2010.

Excessive Heat Exposure Can Pose Higher Risks for those on Psychotropic Medication or Other Substances  During this period when parts of the nation are experiencing record high temperatures, SAMHSA is reminding everyone that these conditions can pose certain health risk to everyone - including people with mental and substance use disorders.

U of I: Alcohol education gets personal -- eCheckup To Go program details tangible costs
The program, called eCheckup To Go, surveys students on their alcohol and tobacco habits, their perceptions of other students' drinking habits, and their life and career goals.  It then uses that data to create an instant customized profile that includes substance use patterns, future risks and tangible costs.

Coping and co-morbidity: Patterns of substance use among people with mental health conditions
Substance use disorders often co-occur with mental health conditions, such as depression and psychosis .  Increasingly, health care providers are developing integrated treatment plans to promote recovery from both substance use disorders (SUD) and mental health (MH) conditions. To facilitate this goal, some researchers have begun to examine reasons for use of particular substances among people with different MH conditions. Read more about this study.....
