Greetings!
As you may have noticed, the name of this newscan has remained the same, howeverwe've broadened the content a bit to reach more professionals and to help share information about substance abuse, problem gambling and associated mental health issues.
We hope you enjoy this first edition of the updated "The Edge: A Resource for Iowa's Behavioral Health Professionals." The Edge is a weekly media scan that is distributed from the Iowa Substance Abuse Information Center (ISAIC).

If you're trying to cut down or quit gambling, we recommend you monitor or track your gambling urges. This new App is based around research that indicates problem gamblers who record both incidents of gambling and their urge to do so will ultimately have better success at managing problematic gambling behaviors.
New Research on Minorities and Gambling
Dr. Barry and co-authors compared black and white respondents on measures of gambling behavior, PPG, mental health, and the co-occurrence of mental disorders and gambling. A better understanding of gambling behaviors, gambling problem severity and other psychiatric disorders associated with PPG in minority populations could benefit gambling prevention and treatment programs.

The Supreme Court on Thursday largely upheld the constitutionality of the Obama Administration's health care law.
In the United States today, there are more than two million jail and prison inmates, of whom about 15 percent have histories of heroin dependence. There are multiple barriers impeding the improved treatment of opioid-dependent inmates, probationers and parolees.
Addiction Treatment in America: Not Based in Science, Not Truly 'Medical' TIME Magazine: Addiction is typically characterized as a disease by experts and government officials. Yet, unlike most known diseases, the treatment of addiction is not based on scientific evidence nor is it required to be provided by people with any medical education - let alone by actual physicians - according to a new report.
