Gambling Problems and the Military  According to a study presented at the American Psychiatric Association's 59th Institute on Psychiatric Services, "Pathological gambling is more prevalent among military veterans than in the US general population and may be associated with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)."

Looking at Gambling Urges With Brain Imaging  There is now evidence of the neurobiological underpinnings of urges thanks to an innovative brain imaging study from the NCRG Center for Excellence in Gambling Research at Yale University.

Number of Iowa problem gamblers remains low  National Problem Gambling Week is coming to an end, and the man in charge of Iowa's program to help problem gamblers says the state continues to have a small number of people who need its services. Mark Vander Linden told the Racing and Gaming Commission Thursday, that surveys continue to show good news for Iowa.

For Vegas casinos, early rounds of March Madness are 'like the Super Bowl times four'  The brackets are out, and some betting is already a day old. In Las Vegas, March Madness is about more than basketball. Sports books throughout the city were posting their odds Monday morning, following Sunday's announcement of the brackets.

Training: Problem Gambling Clinical Aspects

This workshop is March 26-29th in Lincoln, NE.  Cost is @235.00.  This training is designed to provide students with knowledge of treatment issues specific to problem/pathological gambling including denial, resistance, minimization, family dynamics, relapse, spirituality, and influences of self-help groups as well as legal issues, treatment for significant others and special populations and specifically addresses the financial aspects of problem gambling.  

  

 35th Annual Governor's Conference on Substance Abuse  April 3-4 in Des Moines, Iowa.The Governor's Conference on Substance Abuse is suitable for substance abuse treatment providers, prevention specialists, social workers, mental health workers, nurses, clinicians and administrators, corrections professionals, problem gambling treatment providers, public health workers, civic leaders, and policy makers interested in substance abuse treatment, prevention and recovery.
