Shhh! Keep it a Secret: The Role of Stigma and Culture as Barriers to Gambling Treatment  Recent research suggests that a small minority of people who have gambling problems ever seek treatment for those problems (Slutske, 2006). One reason for failing to seek treatment might be the stigma attached to mental health problems, particularly problems with addiction. This week, The WAGER reviews a study that examined whether culture plays a role in the stigma attached to gambling problems and treatment (Dhillon, Horch, Hodgins, 2011).

Pressure mounts for online poker in Iowa  roponents seeking to rein in the unregulated "wild, wild West" environment of illegal online poker in Iowa are girding for another legislative battle this year, while critics worry about a new gaming expansion that could spread addictive forms of electronic gambling from casinos to living rooms.

Internet addiction changes brain similar to cocaine: Study  Can a person be truly addicted to the Internet? A new brain scan study shows not only can that be the case, but also that Internet addiction might cause the same brain changes that are seen in alcoholics and drug addicts.

Iowa lawmakers betting multi-state Internet poker would be a winner  State lawmakers who want to legalize Internet poker in Iowa are putting their chips on a new plan for online gambling that could open the door to multi-state poker pots with more players.

Gambling prevention initiative launched in Surry  The N.C. Problem Gambling Program has partnered with Surry Community College, East Surry, North Surry and Surry Central high schools and Mount Airy Middle School to test its campaign and curriculum programs to raise awareness about and prevent problem gambling.
