Kiwanis Builders Club at Lewis-Palmer Middle School
 | |
Caryn Collette, Principal; Meg Res, President; Evan Mouton, 8th Grade Representative, Beth Claycomb, Faculty Advisor and Benny Nasser, Kiwanis Liaison |
The Lewis-Palmer Middle School Builders Club participated in the Salvation Army Bell Ringing project one Saturday in December and raised $306.32 during their stint manning the kettle.
During the Harvest of Love event, the Club coordinated and raised $2,003 and 1041 pounds of food for Tri-Lakes Cares.
The Builders Club will be conducting a school-wide drive to collect toiletry items for Tri-Lakes Cares in April. In addition, they will collect paper bags and egg cartons to distribute bulk food goods and eggs that come into the facility.
A dance is planned to raise funds for purchasing and planting flowers and trees to enhance the appearance of the middle school campus. Benny Nasser, the MHKC Advisor, said, "A great group of kids that care for others and will no doubt continue with Key Club in high school." |

Happy Bucks
 | | Dennis and Wayne | Dennis Beasley was happy to be back from his trip to Nepal and Cambodia. The trip was interesting and fun with many stories to tell, but once again he was reminded why we love our America, the best country in the world. Wayne Claybaugh (pinch hitting for Steve Stephenson) was happy he is no longer the MHKC President.

Update on the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (CMZ)
by Kelly Parker, Development Manager for the Zoo
 | |
Every kid, Every time, Goosebumps! |
Vision of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo - Every Kid - Every Time - Goosebumps! Every kid, of any age, will have an experience for a lifetime with every visit
The Amphibian crisis - 50% of known amphibian species have gone extinct in the last 70-80 years, much of it due to fungus. CMZ is actively working in Panama and at the zoo to rescue species, remove the infection and keep scarce populations alive. Learn More
Palm oil crisis - The rise in worldwide consumption of palm oil has led to growth of palm oil plantations in Malaysia and Indonesia and has shrunk the rain forest where rare species such as Orangutans live. The zoo's goal is to educate the public on wise use of palm oils
Captive breeding - CMZ has active captive breeding programs that focus on rare Black Footed ferrets, the Wyoming Toad, Mexican Gray Wolves, and Panamanian frogs. The program releases animals back into the wild to re-establish and strengthen native populations

Kelley Parker |
Education - The zoo offers a wide variety of programs to schools, teachers, through public events, and the CMZoo.org website
Attendance - Attendance has grown over the last 15+ years as new exhibits and special programs are promoted to the public. In 2010 543K visitors came to the zoo
Recent exhibits - Snow Leopard exhibit, funded by a capital campaign that incurred no debt; Recently updated Rocky Mountain Wild exhibit provides a "super natural" exhibit space for animals found in Colorado; Current construction project - Encounter Africa is being built with a $13.5M campaign
Current fundraising campaign - "Bank On It! - a program sponsored by USBank where $50 gets you an elephant "piggy" bank that you can decorate and have displayed at the zoo
Exhibits - Kelly walked us through the new elephant barn which is part of the new construction. The elephants have already moved in and enjoy much more space and a wider variety of indoor activities. One that was highlighted is the water stall, where elephants can self-activate a shower - something they love to do
