Remnants of the Colorado Midland Railroad System
by Mel McFarland
 | |
Mel McFarland |
We were again treated to a presentation by Mel McFarland on the remnants of the Colorado Midland Railroad System after 95 years. Mel is a retired middle-school teacher and the author of two books, "Mel McFarland presents Fred Who? A look at food service on the Colorado Midland Railway, 1887-1888" and Colorado Rail Annual No. 17 for the Colorado Railroad Museum". Mel has also authored numerous pamphlet publications dealing with the railroads in Colorado. He is currently serving as the Chief Conductor for the railroad up Pikes Peak.
Mel McFarland presented various pictures of trains and individual train cars that had been part of the Midland Railroad System. The first series of slides showed a complete train in 1915 that had been used as a flower excursion into 11 mile canyon. The train consisted of the engine, a baggage car (used to haul refreshments in a snack bar), the next car was the coach where people sat, and the last car was an open car where the real "die hards" would sit.
Mel spent the remainder of his time identifying various railroad cars that he had discovered throughout Colorado and in most cased their dismal state of repair. One exception was the Official or Business car used by the President of the Colorado Midland coach car that had been restored and transported to Las Vegas.

A special recognition of Anne Shimek. She is the artist who creates the MHKC mug given to all guest speakers. For over 20-years, she has been the driving force in the Club's Empty Bowls dinner with procedes going to Tri-Lakes Cares. Anne is involved with horse and wolf rescue in the region, was nominated in the 2002 to carry the Olympic Flag in Monument, and was awarded the Service to Mankind Award from the Club in 2001.
Thanks to Jim Woodman for member concerns and for today's invocation, Pat Losey for leading us in the Pledge to the Flag, Wayne Claybaugh for scribbing, and Glenn Scott for two GREAT stories.
Sincerely, Ron Heard and Susan Adams Co-Editors K-News Bonnie Nasser Photographer |
