The World of Dogs and Shows
Shelly and Sid Marx and Doug Johnson
Scribe: John Snyder
 | | Frankie |
Three visitors - Casper, Frankie, and Streamer - received an enthusiastic welcome by the MHKC members. With their confident manner and wagging tails, they brought their masters, Shelly and Sid Marx and Doug Johnson, to tell how each dog is a grand champion in major show dog competitions. Frankie, a Beagle, is two years old and full of energy. Casper is a Bouvier De Flanders, and Streamer is a two-time national champion Irish Setter.

Casper |
Sid gave a presentation on the world-wide scope of breeding, dog shows, and other dog competition. He demonstrated how judges evaluate show dogs according to universal standards by examining a dog's teeth, muscles, bones, balance, gait, and coat texture. The American Kennel Club (AKC), established in 1884, oversees and coordinates dog breeding and competition in the U.S., and sanctions and licenses more than 21,000 events yearly.
 | |
Steamer |
The Colorado Springs Kennel Club has a weekend dog show in June at Penrose Stadium in Colorado Springs. Some events are for single breeds, while others are open to various breeds. The AKC also sponsors events where dogs, pedigreed or not, can participate in obedience, tracking, agility, and rally competitions.

Henry David Thoreau said," It's not enough to be busy. The question is, what are you busy about?" We Kiwanians can answer that question with pride. We're busy with fellowship and service, working to benefit others, not just ourselves.
Thanks to Ray Kessler for the invocation, and Ralph Jenkins for leading us in the Pledge to the Flag.
Sincerely, Ron Heard and Susan Adams Co-Editors K-News Bonnie Nasser Photographer |
