Allied Flyers Evading Capture in Germany during World War II
Speaker Brigadier General (Ret) Phil Caine

Gen Phil Caine |
Gen Caine has a distinguished career as an aviator, historian, and professor. He obtained his PhD in History from Stanford University and taught at the US Air Force Academy, serving as the head of the History Department, and as the Deputy Commandant for Military Studies.
Gen Caine retired as a Permanent Professor and is a past member of Monument Hill SERTOMA. Gen Caine has authored four books on military aviation in World War II.
His presentation was drawn from his research on those four books and presented the picture of aircrew evasion efforts in the European Theater in 1944. He related that over that year an average of over 100 aircrew members per day were shot down, and all were attempting to evade capture for at least some period of time. If discovered those that helped downed airmen were often dealt with harshly by the Germans, so getting help from the local population was often difficult.
While most downed airmen were killed or captured fairly quickly, those that were able to evade for any period of time were often characterized by patience, resourcefulness, and physical stamina.
Gen Caine was invited to join Monument Hill Kiwanis Club. |

"The way to love anything is to realize it may be lost." G.K Chesterton
Kiwanis serves children, and we all know how short childhood is. As Kiwanians, let's continue working to help every child grow and develop to his or her full potential, knowing how quickly childhood is outgrown and lost.
