Friends, Fans, and Followers: How Transit Agencies Use Social Media

This webinar explores the use of social media among transit agencies in the United States and Canada. Research findings were drawn from a literature review, a survey of transportation organizations, and six follow-up case studies. Topics include how transit agencies use social media to engage with customers and community, resource requirements, obstacles encountered, case studies, and lessons learned.
This webinar presents the findings from TCRP Synthesis SB-20, Uses of Social Media in Public Transportation, which explores use of social media among transit agencies in the United States and Canada. Research findings were drawn from a literature review, a survey of transportation organizations, and six follow-up case studies.
Topics include:
- how transit agencies use social media to engage with customers and community,
- resource requirements,
- obstacles encountered,
- case studies, and
- lessons learned.

Integrating Sustainability Analysis into Freight

Sustainability is a concept that enables decision-makers to make balanced choices around different and competing objectives.
Freight transportation touches all three dimensions of this sustainability concept: social, environmental, and economic. Current issues relevant to freight sustainability include emissions reductions and climate change, job creation and preservation, and community impacts.
To assist practitioners with sustainability, a number of tools have been developed to integrate sustainability best practices into highway and freight projects and programs.
The webinar will discuss tools and methods from FHWA, the European Union's COFRET (Carbon Footprint of Freight Transport) project, and others that can be used in understanding the sustainability aspects of freight transportation projects.

Transportation Asset Management: Current Trends in Pavement and Bridges
Wednesday, September 19 from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., CST
Hosted by the Transportation Research Board. The webinar will summarize the current trends in transportation asset management related to pavement and bridges.
Participants must register in advance of the webinar, and there is a fee for non-TRB Sponsor employees. A certificate for 2 Professional Development Hours (PDH) will be provided to attendees who register and attend the webinar as an individual. This webinar has been approved for 2 Certification Maintenance Credits from the American Institute of Certified Planners.
The webinar will highlight sessions conducted at the 9th National Conference on Asset Management, which took place on April 16-18, 2011, in San Diego, California. Attendees will learn about the state-of-the-art, state-of-the-practice, lessons learned, and useful tools and techniques to manage pavement and bridge assets.

Sustainable Public Transportation: Environmentally Friendly Mobility Report on the International Transit Studies Program Mission

In the spring 2011, the International Transit Studies Program (ITSP) of the Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) conducted a study mission in India and China, two countries that have experienced rapid economic growth and have made impressive strides in building and operating sustainable transit systems. The study team observed first hand successful practices that five cities in India and China have implemented to make public transportation a priority, create multimodal systems, implement alternative fuel and vehicle technologies, integrate land use and transit planning and to focus on quality service. The Innovative DOT: A Handbook of Policy and Practice

SSTI has teamed up with Smart Growth America to create a resource to inform senior state-level transportation officials as they make decisions that position their agencies for success.
This handbook of transportation policy and practice for the new economy collects the innovative approaches state leaders are already using to make systems more efficient, government more effective, and constituents better satisfied.
The Handbook includes reforms separated into categories:
- Funding and finance
- Revenue allocations and project selection
- Increasing transportation system efficiency
- Pricing
- Improving options for non-automobile mobility
- Integrating transportation and land use
- Streamlining internal DOT operations
- Freight
The descriptions of each area provide information about the political opportunity each presents, steps for implementation, case studies, and resources for further information.
The Handbook is being further revised in coordination with Smart Growth America. The revised version will be available September 2012.

Innovative, Sustainable Funding Options for State DOTs

This webinar will discuss a new SSTI report on innovative, sustainable transportation funding models to assist decision-makers in identifying policies and practices to augment the current fuel tax revenue system.
The report provides a broad account of these funding methods, where they have been implemented or proposed, and identifies state laws, policies, and practices that permit state DOTs and local governments to pursue a more sustainable funding model.
The report, completed with the participation of North Carolina DOT, as well as Arizona, Illinois,Tennessee, Vermont, and Washington DOTs, suggests ways multiple revenue sources might be packaged to support and maintain transportation systems. Join Paul Morris, Deputy Secretary for Transit for NCDOT to hear about options that states can use.
