Making The Case For Funding System Preservation

Tuesday, May 29 from 1:00 p.m - 2:00 p.m., CST

Hosted by State Smart State Initiative

The Interstate-building era provided elected officials and the
Desktop
public with very obvious evidence about how their money was being spent. Today, with a mature highway system that requires more support for
preservation than new construction, DOTs must work harder to show these stakeholders the benefits of investment.

Iowa DOT has been working with SSTI and Spitfire Communications to hone this message. DOT Director Paul Trombino, DOT planning Director Stuart Anderson, and Spitfire's Beth Kanter will present.

Lessons Learned from Irene: RPC Involvement in Recovery of Vermont's Transportation Network

Thursday, June 7 from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., CST

Hosted by the NADO Research Foundation

In August 2011, intense rainfall from Tropical Storm Irene caused flash flooding and inundation across Vermont, particularly in the southern half.  Due to the extent and magnitude of the damage, the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) requested assistance from the state's Regional Planning Commissions (RPCs) that was beyond the normal scope of their work, training, and funding.

No advance plans or procedures were in place for this type of response and recovery effort.  This free webinar will focus on how the lessons learned in Vermont can help other regional planning and development organizations be a valuable asset in future disaster recovery for transportation infrastructure.

A Guidebook for Sustainability Performance Measurement for Transportation Agencies

Tuesday, June 7 from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., CST

Hosted by the Transportation Research Board

The NCHRP guidebook provides a generally-applicable framework and approach to understanding sustainability, and identifying and applying sustainability-related performance measures for transportation agencies. The guidebook discusses the integration of sustainability measures into a transportation agency's core functions and also contains a compendium of sustainability performance measures and various other resources useful to transportation practitioners.

The webinar will be most useful to those who are challenged with providing useful information to agency leadership on how effectively their organization is meeting or can meet sustainability goals.

The webinar will provide participants with an understanding of the concepts of sustainability and the framework provided in the guidebook, including an overview of the resources available as part of NCHRP Report 708. The webinar will include a discussion of the application of sustainability performance measures, ways to use the guidebook from a practitioner perspective, and experiences of a public sector and private sector practitioner in applying the contents of the guidebook.

Participants must register in advance of the webinar, and there is a fee for non-TRB Sponsor employees.
