Decorative & Polished Seminar &
Demo a Wet Success!

CPG's Decorative Committee put on a Decorative and Outside Demo in Rain_  Polished Concrete Seminar & Demo on Sept. 13, 2012. There were about 65 architects, landscape architects, municipal employees, engineers, contractors and concrete industry people in attendance.

Despite the hot drought months we've had in Kansas City, the day we have an outdoor demonstration, it rained! Murphy's Law was ruling.  So we made lemonade out of Overlays in the Rain Jim Mullen lemons.  We had multiple demonstration stations outside to communicate siloxane dyes, joint fillers, crack repair, surface prep, staining concrete, decorative saw cuts, overlays, stenciling, polishing, exposed aggregates, stamped concrete and integral color.  It misted for most of the outdoor demonstrations and the crowd was fantastic and stayed with us.  At the end it started raining pretty good and most of the participants found shelter under two small tents.

We were able to communicate tips the we were trying to convey and the handouts summarized important points.

Thank you to these very active participants in making the event fun, interesting and educational:
  • Artistic Concrete Surfaces
  • Butterfield Color
  • ChemSystems

EPD's are like Nutrition Labels for Products

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD's) meet new Ready Mixed Concrete pic requirements in LEED v4, International Green Construction Code (IgCC) and the Architecture 2030 Challenge for products. EPDs are third-party verified reports published by product manufacturers that provide quality assured and comparable information regarding the environmental performance of their product.

The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association has announced that it is an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Program Operator.  NRMCA will help develop, verify and publish EPDs for ready mixed concrete products.

EPDs are intended to assist specifiers, purchasers and users Nutrition Label of products to compare among products, but do not represent environmental claims regarding the superiority or equivalence of one product versus a competing product that performs the same function. EPDs are developed in accordance with strict international standards that include a transparent verification process for adopting Product Category Rules (PCR) by which EPDs are developed and verified. To produce an EPD, a company must perform a
comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on a product and report the results in the EPD. The PCR defines, among other things, the functional unit (product to be analyzed), scope and boundaries of the LCA and the environmental impacts to be reported in the EPD. Before the EPD can be published, it must be thirdparty reviewed and verified.

"Think of an EPD as a nutrition label for a product; but instead of providing information such as calories, fat content and carbohydrates, an EPD provides information about environmental impacts such as global warming potential, smog formation and water use," saids Lionel Lemay, senior vice president, sustainable development with NRMCA.

New MIT Study:
Stiffer Pavements Reduce Fuel Consumption

A new MIT study, released last week, shows that using MIT Concrete Sustainability Hub logo

stiffer pavements on the nation's paved roads could reduce vehicle fuel consumption by as much as 3 percent. To put that savings into perspective, even a more conservative estimate of 1 percent, though negligible for each vehicle, would add up to 91 million barrels of crude oil per year or $5.2 billion at today's oil prices when applied to the 250 million vehicles that travel those roads annually. This would result in an accompanying annual decrease in CO2 emissions of 15.5 million metric tons, the equivalent of the CO2 stored in roughly 3,800 square miles of trees.

Stiffer pavements would decrease deflection and reduce a car's "footprint."  "This work is literally where the rubber meets the road," says Professor Franz-Josef Ulm, the George Macomber Professor in MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. "We've got to find ways to improve the environmental footprint of our roadway infrastructure....."

To read up on the studies go to:

The researchers say the initial cost outlay for better pavements would quickly pay for itself not just in fuel efficiency and decreased CO2 emissions, but also in reduced maintenance costs.

The study, released in a recent peer-reviewed report, is the first to use mathematical modeling rather than roadway experiments to look at the effect of pavement deflection on vehicle fuel consumption across the entire U.S. road network. A paper on this work has also been accepted for publication later this year in the Transportation Research Record.

This research was conducted as part of the Concrete Sustainability Hub at MIT, which is co-sponsored by the Ready Mixed Concrete Research & Education Foundation
