Special Edition Newsletter

Ebony Magazine!

Greetings!

In our last newsletter, I shared that we had an exciting development in the works.  I'm happy to announce that we're featured in the August 2011 issue of Ebony magazine on newsstands now!

The Black Benefactors are featured in Ebony magazine
The Black Benefactors featured in the August 2011 'Black Wealth' issue of Ebony magazine.

On June 7th, we gathered at the Dance Institute of Washington , a beautiful performing arts building located in the Columbia Heights community for a photo shoot to accompany the article, "Where Wealthy Blacks Give..." that highlights black giving.  The article provides an overview of where and how African Americans give, and describes how giving circles are having a philanthropic impact.

Giving circles are increasing in popularity in the African American community.  We pool our dollars, and then decide together where to give our dollars away.  Not only do we provide grants, but we donate our time and talent to support African American led organizations.  To date, we've granted nearly $10,000 to DC area non profits.  The executive director of one of our 2010 grantees, JoAnn Williams of the African Continuum Theatre Company, was also featured with us in the article.

The response to our photo spread has been great - we are all truly honored to be featured in one of the premier publications for the African American community.

The Woolly Mammoth Theater presents Clybourne Park

Black Benefactors member Edward Jones will participate in the town-hall panel "Gentrification is...." examining a range of perspectives on gentrification in the DC area following the 3 pm performance on August 7.

Join members of the Black Benefactors and the Black Philanthropic Alliance engaging in a conversation that is a timely one for our community. The play Clybourne Park has returned to the Woolly Mammoth Theatre (641 D Street NW), and will run until August 14th. Clybourne Park explores the evolution of race relations and urban development over the past half-century in America by imagining the conflicts surrounding an African American family that purchases a home in a white neighborhood in 1959, and then the re-design of that house in "post-racial" 2009.

While Clybourne Park is an actual neighborhood in Chicago, the play makes no direct reference to its geography, and Woolly believes Clybourne Park is highly reflective of the changes happening to neighborhoods throughout the DC metropolitan area and across the country. To continue this conversation, Woolly Mammoth has created a variety of opportunities for DC audiences to investigate the social and political implications of this provocative work of art, and how they reflect the changes we see happening around us every day. What is the story of your community? How is it being told? Who's doing the telling? Join the conversation about the District around Clybourne Park.

For more information on the play, the town-hall panel and to purchase tickets, visit http://woollymammoth.net/.  Members of the Black Benefactors and Black Philanthropic Alliance receive a special discount on the ticket price!

In related news, the Washington Post recently featured young black professionals and gentrification in Ward 8, the Anacostia community in DC.  Read it HERE.
