National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Patient Perspective: Lori Allen of TLC's 'Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta' shares her TurningPoint story

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April, I felt like a scared child on her first day of school.   I did a lot of "why me?" and I did my share of Lori Allencrying. My journey started with a double lumpectomy and turned into a double mastectomy. Throughout the process, I felt lonely and scared. I had so many questions. Was my body always going to look this way, would I ever have good posture again, would I be able to reach to top shelf in the kitchen, could I hang a heavy bridal gown or, even more importantly, would I feel like me again?

I knew very few people who had battled breast cancer, and I oftentimes felt like I had no one to talk to about my questions and fears. Then I came to TurningPoint. TurningPoint took a scared and frail girl and slowly helped me turn back into a strong and confident lady. Jill and Anita not only helped me to stretch and reach for the stars, they also were my friends who I could ask my hundreds of questions to and not be ashamed. In no time, they had me standing straight, reaching that shelf, hanging those heavy gowns and feeling like Lori again.

When I started this breast cancer journey, I decided something good had to come from it. Although I work with TLC everyday to film Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta and I decided to open up about my battle and let myself be vulnerable in this public forum.

I allowed TLC to film the entire journey, including countless doctors appointments, surgeries and therapy sessions, in hopes that it would help encourage other women to get their mammograms or help someone else facing breast cancer to not be as afraid. I will never say breast cancer is the best thing that ever happened to me, but I feel that meeting some of the wonderful, caring people that I have along the way has been a Godsend. TurningPoint truly was my turning point and, for that, I will always be grateful.

While at TurningPoint, I learned that they serve over 300 newly diagnosed women each year from all over Greater Atlanta in their little clinic in Alpharetta. They are in need of larger space and a more accessible location. Their dream includes a state of the art gym for women during and after treatment, meeting space for educational programs and more treatment rooms. I am thrilled to give back to TurningPoint and women going through breast cancer treatment by making a donation to kick off the fundraising campaign to support TurningPoint's much needed new clinical facility to make care more accessible for all women of Greater Atlanta.

Ashford Advisors

Ashford Advisors is not an ordinary company. It is one that has survived the test of time since 1898. We have had hundreds of employees during that span and served more than 50,000 clients in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. For all those years, for every single client, in each of our offices, our commitment is unwavering. To protect and grow the wealth of our customers so they can enjoy the fruits of their hard work. Our footprint is larger than many realize. And yet, that is only part of the difference we make.

In our traditions, "to whom much is given, much is expected." Giving back is important to us, and it is something we do as a firm and as individuals. Because it is at the heart of Ashford Advisors and it is at the heart of the people who are a part of our company.

TurningPoint first touched the Ashford Advisors family in 2005, when the spouse of an employee was diagnosed with breast cancer. During her four-year battle with breast cancer, TurningPoint did so much for her... it was a place of support, encouragement, and positive experiences. Though breast cancer eventually took her life in 2009, TurningPoint was a bright spot for her during difficult times. It touched her life, her family's lives, and in turn, Ashford Advisors.

We support TurningPoint because we not only believe in the mission, we saw it first-hand; and we hope that by giving back, it will touch other lives the way it did Jeanie Mumpower's and ours.

Evidence Update: Compression Sleeve While Exercising

There is a significant amount of research that shows that upper body resisted exercise (weight training) helps reduce the risk of lymphedema and helps manage lymphedema in those women that have it. We are often asked these questions about using a sleeve while exercising:

Sleeve and Glove 1. If upper body and aerobic exercise is safe and even benefits women with lymphedema, why am I told to wear a sleeve when I exercise 'just in case'?

It can be confusing when we say that exercise is a positive but then turn around and tell you to wear a sleeve when you "just in case it increases your lymphedema." The theory behind the studies that show the benefit of exercise in reducing and controlling lymphedema is that it enhances lymph flow through muscle contraction (acts as a natural pump) as well as increasing lean muscle, reducing body fat and helping control weight. The reason we suggest wearing a sleeve during exercise for women with lymphedema is actually to enhance the 'pumping action' of the muscles - not because exercise might cause problems. A recent study supports this approach:

A small randomized controlled trial was performed to evaluate the effect of the combination of compression therapy with active exercising on arm lymphedema. Twenty women with lymphedema resulting from breast cancer treatment performed upper body exercise in each of two sessions. In one session women exercised using a compression sleeve and the other without. Limb volumes were calculated before and after each series of exercises. A significant mean reduction in arm volume was seen with compression and a slight increase in volumes was observed when women exercised without compression.

2. I don't have lymphedema, but I am at risk for it - should I wear aWoman lifting dumbells  sleeve when I exercise?

In general, we don't recommend that women who don't have lymphedema wear a compression sleeve. The lymph system is a delicate balance between fluid and pressure and clinical studies show that exercise does not appear to be a trigger for lymphedema... in fact, it reduces your risk!

BOTTOM LINE:  Compression sleeves may enhance the beneficial effect of exercise for women with lymphedema. Exercise is important for women who are at risk for, but do not have, lymphedema and there is no research to support the need to wear a compression sleeve during exercise for these women.

National Lymphedema Network Conference

National Lymphedema NetworkJill Binkley, Executive Director of TurningPoint spoke at the 10th annual National Lymphedema Network conference in Dallas on September 6th, 2012. The audience included over 500 healthcare providers and patient advocates working in the area of lymphedema. Jill's talk presented the recently published American Cancer Society prospective surveillance model of rehabilitation for breast cancer. The model emphasizes the importance of rehabilitation for all women with breast cancer to address the many physical side effects of treatment. The model advocates early detection of the physical issues such as shoulder problems, weight gain, functional limitations and lymphedema in order to reduce and even prevent some of these issues. For futher details, see the full publication in the journal Cancer.

TurningPoint Women's Healthcare is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that maximizes quality of life for women with breast cancer by providing, promoting and advocating specialized and evidence-based rehabilitation.
