Evidence Update: Finding Your Own Place and Time to Walk

Regular physical activity fosters good physical and mental health. For breast cancer survivors, it also decreases risk of recurrence, reduces fatigue and improves quality of life. The recommendation is that a person needs to accumulate only 30 minutes per day, 5 days

Two women walking

per week, of moderately intense physical activity, such as brisk walking, to achieve these benefits. For almost everyone, walking is a familiar activity performed in the conduct of normal daily activities.

The availability and awareness of places conducive to physical  activity are associated with higher levels of physical activity. This study surveyed adults in the state of Georgia to determine the extent to which they could identify safe and convenient places for walking and whether the proximity of those places was associated with self-reported physical activity behaviors. Those able to walk to the place in less than 10 minutes are most likely to be active. These data support previous reports indicating the value of convenient places for activity.

BOTTOM LINE: Identifying a place that you can walk regularly that is convenient, safe and enjoyable is an important part of maintaining your program. Join us for our education event this month to learn more about 'The Science of Walking'.

Why I am a Board Member of TurningPoint
Angela Dotson UGA
At UGA giving a presentation on public accounting.

I am a board member of TurningPoint because they helped me get back to normal after my bilateral mastectomy. To this day, I remember the sense of freedom I had after my first session with Marcia Pearl. A few weeks after the surgery, I was having issues with range of motion, soreness, and the fear of injuring myself by trying to do too much too soon. My family and friends were very supportive and helped me lift anything over a few pounds or reach things that were higher up that required me to stretch out my arms. My doctors told me take it easy and gave me instructions for light duty. By the time I was cleared to do normal things, I couldn't perform some movements and was tentative to try others. Marcia helped me stretch and gave me clear information on how I should feel and how to troubleshoot if there was a problem. She gave me the green light to actually drive home from that first visit. I didn't feel confident about it, but was thrilled she gave me the go ahead after making her assessment.

The first thing I did after getting back to my mom's house with my friend who drove me to the appointment was to find an excuse to get back on the road - alone this time. I drove by a couple of my aunts who were a few houses up the street as I was headed out to Target. They gave me this look of "what is she doing and where is she going alone?" I waived and laughed to myself because I could read their puzzled and probably disapproving expressions. It felt great to have a sense of independence again. It made me feel normal again. I was on the road to getting back to myself and getting back to normal life. My battle with breast cancer was a difficult and long process. My family,

friends and doctors took great care of me. I am thankful for all the support I received during such a difficult time. The process robbed me of some things while I was undergoing treatment. It was emotionally and physically hard at times not to mention the time lost due to treatment and recovery.   Before going to TurningPoint, I didn't feel like I had my life back even though the cancer was gone. TurningPoint helped me regain my freedom and helped me get back to my life.

I am a board member because of the tremendous impact TurningPoint has made on my life and I want to support them as they give other women and their families the same type of experience and care.

TurningPoint Promotes Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Around the U.S.

I took part in TurningPoint's first clinical preceptorship for physical therapists in August, 2012. The goal of the program is to educate physical therapists from around the country about breast cancer rehabilitation. It involves background reading and research followed by a week in the clinic with TurningPoint clinicians learning and seeing patients.

During my time at TurningPoint, I was able to observe many different aspects of breast cancer treatment and the physical side effects of treatment. Not only did I learn treatment options for my future patients, but I feel that I have formed friendships and professional relationships that will help me become a better physical therapist for the rest of my career. The women at TurningPoint have also become role models for me.

Katherine Prevost

I am currently opening a practice in South Louisiana with a partner and my goal is to model our clinic after TurningPoint, both the excellent care that is provided but the manner in which it is provided.
