Evidence Update: Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction for Breast Cancer Survivors

Beach SceneTo assess the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) for mood, breast- and endocrine-specific quality of life, and well-being after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation for women with stage 0 to III breast cancer. Mindfulness is characterized by sustained moment-to-moment awareness of mental state and includes continuous, immediate awareness of physical sensations, perceptions, affective states, thoughts, and imagery. In this study, patients were randomly assigned to the 8-week MBSR program or standard care. The study found that mood, quality of life, and well-being was better in women during and following the MBSR program than standard care in women with stage 0 to III breast cancer, and these results persisted at three months. This study suggests that MBSR may help alleviate long-term emotional and physical side effects of breast cancer treatments.

Patient Perspective: One birthday wish
Betty Stuckey
Betty and her huband Sam.

May 2011 to May 2012 - All I can say is Wow -What a year! I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer May 2011, a few days prior to my 59th birthday. What a birthday present! I started 16 weeks of chemo therapy treatments in June, followed by a mastectomy in October. Then I received some good news. The pathology reports came back negative. I am happy to report I am cancer free!

In the year that passed, seemingly at the speed of light, I was really blessed with the support of my family and friends. As I look back upon this time, I am amazed at how generous and giving they were. We have the best family and such wonderful friends!

I was fortunate to have excellent medical treatment throughout my chemo and surgery. After surgery, I had very limited range of motion due to having lymph nodes removed. That's where the staff at TurningPoint came in. My doctor referred me to TurningPoint for physical therapy. Although my husband was a bit skeptical at first (mostly about having to drive across town), after he sat through the first session of therapy, he quickly changed his mind.

The amount of information and understanding we received was invaluable. TurningPoint's staff not only helped me with my physical condition, regaining my strength and flexibility, but they provided emotional support as well. My questions and concerns were handled thoughtfully and compassionately. Having therapists who could relate to what I was going through was very helpful.

Fast forward to the present....it is now a year later, May 2012. My

Betty and Krystal
Betty and daughter Krystal.

husband and daughter surprised me with a "60 and Fabulous" Birthday Celebration! In lieu of birthday presents, they requested our family and friends make a tax deductible donation in my honor to TurningPoint. What a unique and worthwhile gift!

My recovery is going great! I continue with physical therapy to help keep my lymphedema under control. Regular visits for treatments as well as performing the recommended exercises have minimized symptoms. In fact, Jill Binkley says that I am a poster child for how effective treatment should work.

Many, many thanks and words of appreciation go out to Jill and the wonderful staff at TurningPoint.
