Evidence Update: Acupuncture Versus Effexor for the Management of Hot Flashes in Patients With Hormone Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer | |
Hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms are common adverse effects of anti-estrogen hormone treatment in conventional breast cancer care. In a study conducted by the American Society of Clinical Oncology, fifty patients were randomly selected for the study with half receiving acupuncture, and the other half taking Venlafaxine (Effexor).
Both groups exhibited significant decreases in hot flashes, depressive symptoms, and other quality-of-life symptoms, including significant improvements in mental health from pre- to post-treatment. These changes were similar in both groups, indicating that acupuncture was as effective as Venlafaxine.
____________________________________________________________
However, 2 weeks after the treatment, the venlafaxine group experienced significant increases in hot flashes, whereas hot flashes in the acupuncture group remained at low levels.
____________________________________________________________
The venlafaxine group experienced more adverse side effects, including nausea, dry mouth, dizziness and anxiety, whereas the acupuncture group experienced no negative adverse effects. Acupuncture had the additional benefit of increased sex drive in some women, and most reported an improvement in their energy, clarity of thought, and sense of well-being.
Acupuncture, a complementary therapy that has been used successfully to treat a variety of health problems, is a promising alternative to venlafaxine because it has few or no adverse effects, and preliminary studies indicate its effectiveness in decreasing hot flashes, night sweats, sweats and other symptoms.
In conclusion, acupuncture may be at least as effective as drug therapy in patients with breast cancer who experience hot flashes, night sweats and other symptoms, and it may provide additional and longer term benefits without adverse effects. It is a safe, effective and durable treatment for these symptoms secondary to long-term anti-estrogen hormone therapy in breast cancer patients.

Kyle and Erin Long |
Erin Long joined the staff at TurningPoint as a volunteer last January, and formally joined the staff as Development Director in April. Erin is responsible for most of the fundraising activities at TurningPoint including the Tourney for TurningPoint, annual campaign and foundation and corporate grants.
Erin grew up in Northern Kentucky in the suburbs of Cincinnati and graduated from the University of Kentucky. She moved to Atlanta in 2007 when her husband was transferred for his job. Erin has a 10 year career in development and has worked for hospital systems and metro-based community non-profits. After welcoming her son in 2009, she started doing contract work for grassroots non-profits that could not afford a full-time fundraising professional. In this journey, she met Jill Binkley and volunteered her time to write grants. Her volunteer position quickly moved to a more part-time job. Erin currently works

15 - 20 hours per week for TurningPoint and spends the rest of her time with her two-year-old son, Henry.
When she was 16, Erin's grandmother died after a long battle with breast and colon cancer, and in 2009, her tennis partner successfully won her battle with breast cancer. Erin is amazed at the strength, perseverance and positive spirit of the women she meets at TurningPoint, and is happy to be part of the team.
"Coming to work is a joy for me," says Erin. "I look forward to the organization's successes, but also to meeting the women we serve. They provide great inspiration to strive to do my best in my job." |
