TurningPoint Participates in Exciting American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Rehabilitation Project...A Personal Perspective from Jill Binkley, Executive Director

American Cancer SocietyMeeting the Unmet Needs of Breast Cancer Survivors Locally and Nationally

I am grateful every day for the life-saving care provided by my doctors and nurses when I went through breast cancer treatment 12 years ago that included surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Even though I had been a physical therapist for many years, I was truly shocked at the extent and impact of the physical side effects of the treatment. I experienced shoulder and chest wall tightness and pain, cording, lymphedema, fatigue, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy...and the list goes on. I needed information on whether it was safe and advisable to continue to exercise, including my usual running and rowing. There was really nowhere to turn to find answers and care for these issues. I wondered if I was alone in my experience.

Out of my experience, TurningPoint was born. I felt that it was critical that other women be able to get answers and treatment they deserve. It turns out I was not alone! Since TurningPoint started in 2003, we have cared for over 1500 women with breast cancer from all over Greater Atlanta and from all walks of life. It's a start, but just the tip of the iceberg! Every single day, we see women who were completely unprepared for the impact of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Women whose issues could have been prevented or reduced if they had been referred earlier. Women who arrive in tears of despair leave in tears of joy to have found the answers and help they need.

For the past year, I have had the honor of working on a project with the American Cancer Society. It began with a meeting of international experts on breast cancer rehabilitation and exercise and resulted in the publication of a special supplement in the journal Cancer, dedicated to breast cancer rehabilitation and exercise. In the publication, we outline current research in the field and propose a model of care that includes rehabilitation evaluation before and early after breast cancer surgery, as well as ongoing surveillance, or periodic 'rehab check-in' to screen for issues as they develop. Many of our TurningPoint physical therapists and advisory board members were involved as authors in the supplement. We are proud to be an integral part of this important and ongoing work on behalf of all women with breast cancer. Our goal is to make breast cancer rehabilitation and exercise a routine part of our breast cancer journey - nationally and internationally. To the women we have served over the years...this one's for you!

Patient Perspective: "I found my safe haven"

Wanda BriscoeSeveral months after I finished my radiation treatments in May 2011, I started experiencing tightness in my arm and I had difficulty reaching into cabinets, putting my seat belt on, combing my hair and putting on clothes. I saw an article in the local newspaper about TurningPoint, so I called and made an appointment. From the moment you enter TurningPoint, you feel the warmth from the staffs' understanding and caring spirit, which helped to calm my nerves. I started physical therapy for lymphedema and cording symptoms in my arm, and saw positive results immediately. My range of motion when I started in November 2011 was at 98 degrees (shoulder level) and in April of 2012 my range had increased to 164 degrees (full)! I've also attended services that they offer on weight management, educational sessions, individual counseling and massage therapy.

TurningPoint has been a safe haven to me. Even though my family and friends have been and continue to be supportive, they didn't fully understand the physical struggles that I endured. The staff at TurningPoint assured me that I was not alone in my daily physical limitations and that women like me do not often talk about them because we don't know how to grasp them. What I've learned in dealing with breast cancer was that it was not put here to defeat me. It gave me a fighting spirit for life, it gave me focus. Because of TurningPoint, I am finding my "new normal" and I have a new confidence in myself.  I can now perform my daily life functions with ease when I couldn't do them several months ago and I have recovered to the point where I am now back to playing tennis!

My improvement has allowed me to get back to full swing with my work with H.E.E.Ls (Helping to Encourage and Empower Lives) which was founded in October 2011.  I have learned from the women of TurningPoint and the women in Ladies in H.E.E.Ls that our hearts and souls are joined together by laughter and tears and we shall always have a bond. I am grateful for the encouragement from both of these organizations. Several members of Ladies in H.E.E.Ls, as well as myself, will be participating in TurningPoint's team at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on May 12, 2012 in Atlanta.

Even when I am finished with my physical therapy treatments at TurningPoint, I will continue to support this organization and take advantage of the services that they offer. TurningPoint is a wonderful asset to the community and I highly recommend this facility. Thank you, TurningPoint for being my safe haven.
