American Cancer Society Project Update

American Cancer SocietyTurningPoint Women's Healthcare is very proud to be an integral part of a project sponsored by the American Cancer Society that began in 2010. The goal of the work is to make rehabilitation and exercise part of every woman's cancer journey. We are very excited that April brings the publication of a new supplement in the journal Cancer that outlines an innovative model to address a wide range of physical issues faced by women with breast cancer and offers hope for improved function and full participation in life activities for patients through rehabilitation and exercise.

Jill Binkley,TurningPoint's Executive Director was a member of the planning committee, expert panel and an author and editor. Dr. Marcia Pearl,TurningPoint physical therapist and board chair is an author. Dr. Sheryl Gabram, MD,MBA and Dr.Susan Harris, PT, PhD both TurningPoint medical advisory board members are co-authors on several papers.

Stay tuned for a special announcement in the next few weeks when the supplement is published!

Evidence Update: Exercise, Vital for Survival!

Exercise after diagnosis of breast cancer in association with survival*

What problems did the researchers set out to study and why?

The researchers wanted to evaluate the association of exercise after breast cancer diagnosis with mortality and disease recurrence.

Who participated in the study? 4,826 women with stage I to III breast cancer participated in the study. The women were between 20 and 75 years of age. Women were assessed 6, 18 and 36 months after diagnosis.

What information does this study offer for women with breast cancer? The more women exercised the more likely they were to be alive and disease free thirty-six months following diagnosis.

How did the researchers go about the study? Information on medical history, cancer diagnosis, treatments, quality of life, body mass index and lifestyles were obtained by in-person interviews and review of medical charts. Women were asked if they participated in routine exercise, and the intensity and type of exercise. Additionally, the women were asked to identify the 5 most common tasks they performed. Using this data the researchers calculated the metabolic equivalent scores (MET). A MET is a calculation of energy expenditure. One MET is the amount of energy expended at rest, (3 to 4 METS is light activity, and 8 to 9 METS would be very heavy activity- carrying a heavy load up stairs, running). After adjusting for quality of life, clinical prognostic factors, menopausal status and body mass, the researchers found that the higher the MET level, the more a woman exercised and was active - the greater the length of overall survival as well as disease-free survival. The study included a large sample size and a lengthy observation period which make the results more generalizeable to the population of breast cancer survivors.

How might these results be applied to you? TurningPoint can offer you an individualized exercise prescription that can enable you to achieve a higher activity (MET) level and greater overall quality of life. In addition, you can join our weekly exercise class on Thursday mornings.

Spotlight on Staff Volunteer

Maureen volunteers at TurningPoint once a week providing assistance in the office with patients and administrative tasks. About two years ago, she retired from her position as a corporate tax manager at United Parcel Service after 32 years. While working full-time and raising a family, it was difficult to volunteer as much as she would have liked. Her immediate goal upon retiring was to find meaningful volunteer work. TurningPoint is thrilled to be one of the places Maureen has decided to spend her time as a volunteer.

Maureen finds it very humbling to meet the incredible patients who walk in the door every day. Their spirit never ceases to amaze her. It is obvious that the women who have found their way to TurningPoint consider it an oasis in the midst of all of the treatments and procedures that they are undergoing. She is honored to work with such a caring and compassionate staff, and is proud to support their mission.

In addition to volunteering at TurningPoint, Maureen is a food pantry volunteer at North Fulton Community Charities and regularly donates blood platelets at the American Red Cross. Maureen and her husband, Harry, have been married for 31 years. They have three sons; twins Scott and Brian, 23, and Kevin, 17. They also have a yellow lab, Max. They are originally from Connecticut, and have lived in Alpharetta for 20 years. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, exercise (running, biking, and hiking), and travel.

Update on Hispanic Outreach
Semana de la mujer
Arelis is pictured here with staff from the consulate and other event participants.

Arelis Nelms, TurningPoint's Hispanic/Latina Outreach Coordinator, attended a week-long program at the Mexican Consulate in Atlanta. On Monday March 5th,  TurningPoint had an information table set up at the consulate with material on TurningPoint and breast cancer survivorship care in Spanish.

The consulate's special week of activity was specifically for women and helping them be even more aware of the resources available to them. Several women and organizations stopped by TurningPoint's booth. This was the first time the consulate has done this and they seem to have had a great turnout. We hope to participate again and continue to reach out to all women affected by breast cancer. Visit our Facebook page for more pictures of the event.

On March 15th, Arelis was interviewed by Mundo Hispánico, Georgia's oldest and largest free Spanish newspaper. The interview was published on March 21st.

We continue to strive to reach out to the Hispanic/Latina community through various means. We hope to have a successful year in doing this. Further events are planned for this year and as always, we will keep you informed.

TurningPoint Women's Healthcare is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that maximizes quality of life for women with breast cancer by providing, promoting and advocating specialized and evidenced based rehabilitation.
