Evidence Update: Low Carbs and Breast Cancer
| |
New Study Suggests that Low-Carbohydrate Diet Reduces Risk of Breast Cancer Recurrence
Each December, the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium sponsored by The Cancer Therapy & Research Center at University of Texas and the American Association for Cancer Research each December provides state-of-the-art breast cancer research findings. This past December, an interesting paper was presented related to the effect of carbohydrate intake on the risk of breast cancer recurrence.
The study was conducted by Jennifer A. Emond, M.S. and included 2,651 women who participated in the larger Women's Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) Dietary Intervention Trial. The WHEL Dietary Intervention Trial involved 3,088 breast cancer survivors who were followed for 7 years in which researcher studied breast cancer recurrence.
The study looked at the relationship between carbohydrate intake and breast cancer recurrence. Researchers found that increased carbohydrate intake over one year was associated with a higher rate of breast cancer recurrence. It appeared that the increased risk related to carbohydrate intake was limited to women with low grade tumors.
These results suggest that there is a need for further research examining the effects of limiting carbohydrate (starch) intake among women with breast cancer. Please note that this information was taken from abstracts (i.e. summary) of the presentation and we look forward reading the full study once published.

| Patient Perspective: "I felt a little stronger" | |
As I was thinking about what TurningPoint has meant to me over the last several weeks, the first thing that came to mind was that TurningPoint (the organization) was actually the "turning point" in my recovery.
It had been four weeks since my double mastectomy. The only way I can describe myself during those first several weeks was a "walking zombie". My personality had temporarily disappeared and my arms had become rather useless as too much movement just seemed to cause more pain and discomfort.
Then I walked into TurningPoint, an organization specializing and focusing totally on women with breast cancer. The friendly staff and knowledgeable therapists were there to help me, knowing just what attention I needed at that point in my recovery. With each visit, I felt a little stronger and closer to becoming "me" again.
I cannot stress how valuable this wonderful, dedicated organization is. I only wish my sister, a breast cancer survivor of almost 20 years, had had access to a group like TurningPoint. It has been a real blessing to me.

Spotlight on Staff: Leslie Hunter, LMT
| |
Leslie Hunter, massage therapist, joined the TurningPoint staff in in November, 2011. Leslie has a corporate background working with a major airline and a telecommunications company. While still with the airline, she enrolled as a night student at the Academy of Somatic Healing Arts. She graduated in 1996 with certifications in Swedish, Neuromuscular and Sports Massage.
After graduation, she continued to work within the corporate structure full-time, while maintaining a part-time practice until 2006 when she accepted a buy-out from her company and began working as a massage therapist full-time.
As a breast cancer survivor, Leslie recognizes the need for the services at TurningPoint. "I can really see the value of a place like TurningPoint. While I was going through surgery and chemo, my only touch-points were my doctors, and the experience can be bewildering. Massage and Physical Therapy were not options that were offered at that time, and I appreciate the value that they bring to those on this journey - it's great to have a nurturing place to come to."

The Pink Affair: You are officially 'Uninvited' | |
A note from the Founders of The Pink Affair to the TurningPoint's Community...

We were planning to invite you the "pinkest" and most wonderful Pink Affair we have ever held at the Atlanta Athletic Club on March 24th. But - life sometimes throws you a curve ball and you have to redirect your focus and dedication of your time. This year, cancer has touched The Pink Affair family. We realized that we would not be able to host our event at the level to which all of our past supporters deserve and expect. But we do want to fulfill our commitment to raise funds for TurningPoint. So, we have come up with a fantastic idea! Have we "pinked" your interest? Check out our website below and look for the details of this year's event
coming soon in your mailbox and email.
Thank you for your support in the past, and with this year's event! Judy Suggs and Kathy Smith
