Sexuality, Body Image & Breast Cancer

Sexuality issues affect a high percentage of breast cancer survivors in one way or another. Most breast cancer survivors do not discuss changes in body image or sexuality with their healthcare providers. The changes may be a result of the breast cancer diagnosis itself, or a result of surgery and other breast cancer treatment. Unfortunately, body image, sex and sexuality are topics that are often difficult toWoman looking in compact mirror discuss openly due to cultural and religious taboos that make it feel shameful or embarrassing, especially for women. The most common complaints of breast cancer survivors in the area of sexuality are diminished sexual desire and painful intercourse. These are normal responses to the changes that occur as a result of going through breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, and can be successfully treated.

The educational program this month is dedicated to exploring issues of how breast cancer affects sexuality. We will discuss how we define ourselves sexually, the physical and emotional changes that occur with diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, and ways to cope with those changes. We will also talk about the concerns of partners and of survivors who are single. We hope you will join us for this important topic.

Patient Perspective: "Cancer has done nothing but made me stronger..."

Not that there's ever a good time to be diagnosed with cancer, but it seemed a particularly bad time for me. I had just turned 40, and had recently been promoted to a leadership position at the cancer center where I'd been working for 10 years. I was thrilled to take on this new leadership role, and needed it because, with my husband deep in the trenches of a Ph.D. program, I was the primary bread winner in my family. Although I was busy and spread too thin, the future was looking bright, and we had decided it was time try to have a second child. I remember waiting to find the results of my biopsy, and saying to my husband, "There's no way I have cancer. Nothing ever happens to me."

But now here I am, a year and half later, writing a "patient's

perspective" for TurningPoint. Thinking back, I realize how amazing it is that overall, the cancer has really done nothing but make me stronger. I still have my great job. My husband has finished all his course work and is set to finish his dissertation and graduate this spring. I haven't had a second child, of course, and I'm not sure I will, but it's not completely out of the question. This is not to say that the whole cancer episode has been a cake walk. Although I was never without hope, on the day of my first visit to TurningPoint, I was pretty discouraged. I was a few weeks out of radiation, and was feeling crummy.   My pain and lack of energy was keeping me from doing several things I love, most importantly playing and snuggling with my 6 year old son, Zachary. But after one session with Jill, my range of motion improved by 20 degrees, and my energy improved significantly. And now, after a few months at TurningPoint, I am almost back to "normal."

I think a big reason I've recovered so well is not only the excellent therapy I get at TurningPoint, but just simply being able to go there to care for myself. I've had all of my cancer treatment at the cancer center where I work. I realized that I would never be able to separate my "work self" from my "patient self." I needed a place to go where my health and wellness was all that mattered. At TurningPoint, I've taken part in seminars, support groups, exercise classes, and look forward to years of engagement and contribution with such a fabulous organization. My breast cancer journey is far from over. It's going to be life-long. I love that I have TurningPoint to support me.
