New Year Party

NEW YEAR.....NEW BEGINNINGS

2011 Year in Review

It has been another incredible year for TurningPoint Women's Healthcare as we continue our mission of providing, promoting and advocating specialized and evidence-based rehabilitation care for women with breast cancer. In 2011, TurningPoint provided a total of 3,180 physical therapy, massage therapy, counseling and nutrition visits, serving 287 new patients; and provided financial assistance to 46% of those served. We are excited to be part of the leadership team of an important American Cancer Society initiative to develop a model of rehabilitation for breast cancer survivors. The results of this effort will be published as a special supplement to the journal Cancer in the spring of 2012. This is a very important step toward our goal of making rehabilitation an integral part of every breast cancer patient's care.

We were thrilled that TurningPoint continued to be the beneficiary of the Zeta Tau Alpha North Fulton Alumnae Chapter's annual fundraising event, 'The Pink Affair'. TurningPoint successfully launched our inaugural annual charity golf tournament, the Tourney for TurningPoint. We were also very fortunate to continue our partnership with the Susan G. Komen Foundation - Greater Atlanta, It's the Journey, Inc.-Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, The Kroger Foundation, The Imlay Foundation and the Alpharetta Country Club Charity Golf Tournaments, as well as build new relationships with Harry's Whole Foods, The Sport of Giving and The Georgia Baptist Healthcare Ministry Foundation.

In the past eight years, TurningPoint has served more than 1,500 women with breast cancer. Our services improve quality of life by reducing pain, restoring motion, regaining strength and learning how to cope with the emotional issues of living with and surviving breast cancer.

Thank you to the women we serve for entrusting your care to us. Thank you to our community partners, donors and volunteers for your support. We look forward to a wonderful year serving more women with breast cancer in our community and beyond. Have a wonderful New Year!

Evidence Update: Core Exercise Benefits in Breast Cancer

A recent study examined the effects of an 8-week multimodal program focused on CORE (abdominal and trunk) stability exercises and recovery massage on physical and psychological outcomes in breast cancer survivors. Seventy-eight women were randomly allocated into two treatment groups. The experimental group received core stability exercises plus massage (myofascial release) and the control group, or usual care group, did not receive this additional care. The treatment time was 8 weeks. Mood state, fatigue, trunk curl endurance and leg strength were determined at baseline, after the last treatment session, and at 6 months of follow-up. Immediately after treatment and at 6 months, fatigue, mood state, trunk curl endurance, and leg strength exhibited greater improvement in women in the exercise-massage group compared to the group who did not receive this additional care. While further research is needed to determine the key aspects of a rehabilitation program that are the most effective in improving physical and emotional well-being, this study suggests that a multi-modal program that includes exercise and massage techniques may benefit breast cancer survivors.

On January 19th, TurningPoint will present a special educational session about exercise and breast cancer, with special emphasis on CORE strength.

Once she joined the work force, she has used her bilingual talents in administrative and customer service for homebuilders and interior design companies before stepping into the world of healthcare. TurningPoint has been an eye-opening journey for her. "I thought I knew about breast cancer but realized how little I knew when I came to TurningPoint. What a humbling experience this has been."
