TurningPoint Hits the Road...
One aspect of TurningPoint's mission is to promote evidence-based rehabilitation for women with breast cancer nationally. It is critical that there are more physical and occupational therapists who understand the unique needs of women with breast cancer.
TurningPoint Physical Therapists, Jill Binkley and Carrie Kozel, taught a course on breast cancer rehabilitation for physical and occupational therapists in Saginaw, Michigan in October.
The course was well received and feedback from participants was excellent!

| Patient Perspective: Carry Laughter with You Wherever You Go...... | |
Four months after moving to Georgia I found out I had breast cancer. I had a mastectomy with an expander, replaced by an implant. Surgery went well and as an adamant golfer I was back on the course 6 weeks post-op. After my second surgery when they removed the expander and replaced it with the implant I felt better, but not my old self. I was surprised that even after they removed the expander I felt extreme fatigue, pain and stiffness in my back, arms and neck.
I was having difficulty doing my usual activities and golf was a struggle. Some women at the golf course told me about TurningPoint. At my first visit, they assessed me and to my amazement I had a deficit in my range of motion and could benefit from therapy. After therapy began I quickly gained my energy, strength and range of motion. With my muscles relaxed I was able to sleep much better and was truly much happier, not just that pretend smile that we use to get through the day. I found myself singing out of tune to the radio, laughing out loud to the television and enjoying just sitting in a restaurant with my family.
TurningPoint gave me a place to talk to people who understood what I was experiencing. With moving away from old friends it was hard to really talk to anyone and gain perspective of what I was feeling. Turning Point gave me back my quality of life, a life with full movement, energy and joy.

Our Annual Campaign Continues.... Please Support TurningPoint's 2011 Annual Fundraising Campaign...
It has been a very exciting year for TurningPoint Women's Healthcare as we strive to continue our mission of providing, promoting and advocating specialized and evidence-based rehabilitation care for women with breast cancer. In 2011, TurningPoint will provide a total of over 3,000 physical therapy, massage therapy, counseling and nutrition visits; serve 300 new patients; and provide financial assistance to 46% of those served. And even more good news...TurningPoint is now part of the American Cancer Society's planning team to develop a model of rehabilitation services for breast cancer survivors! This is a huge step forward for women who are fighting and surviving breast cancer!
These accomplishments were realized thanks to our very generous donors. As we enter Breast Cancer Awareness month, I ask you to make a donation to TurningPoint. Your generous gift - of any amount - will give us the power to serve all women with breast cancer regardless of their ability to pay for services. It will provide much needed educational programs for patients and healthcare providers. Breast cancer does not discriminate...it affects all women - your next door neighbor, your sister, your best friend, your tennis partner, your mother, your daughter.
Thank you for your support in the past, and for considering our request for support once again,
Jill
Jill Binkley, Executive Director

Evidence Update: Acupuncture's Role in Treatment of Women with Breast Cancer
Acupuncture is an ancient medical treatment originating in China 3500 years ago. Specific locations on the skin are stimulated by extremely thin, solid metallic needles which are manipulated either my hand or by electricity.
In the United States, acupuncture is used to treat a variety of symptoms and conditions associated with breast cancer and the side effects of cancer treatment. A number of well-known cancer centers including Memorial Sloan Kettering, Dana Farber, and MD Anderson integrate acupuncture into cancer care.
A search of the literature found 320 articles specific to acupuncture and cancer and 56 articles specific to breast cancer since January 2007. Two-thirds of these studies reported positive results. Sound studies have demonstrated acupuncture to be effective and safe for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, post-operative pain relief, aromatase inhibitor induced joint pain relief, fatigue, hot flashes, insomnia, anxiety and quality of life. Anti-nausea studies and hot flash studies are the most prevalent.
Aromatase-inhibitor Induced Joint Pain[1]: Women treated with acupuncture had significant improvement of joint pain and stiffness and 20% of the women no longer needed any pain control medications at all.
Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy[2]: Neuropathy is a common problem following Taxane chemotherapy. A small study of only 5 patients suggested a positive response to acupuncture.
Fatigue[3]: Although studies on fatigue were not limited to women with breast cancer, significant improvements were found in regards to both general fatigue and physical fatigue levels and the positive effects of the acupuncture persisted for 2 to 3 weeks following the last acupuncture treatment.
Hot Flashes[4]: Several randomized control trials of acupuncture found that hot flash frequency in women with "chemopause" was reduced 50% following acupuncture treatments.
Insomnia[5]: Ear acupuncture appears to be successful in treating insomnia. The treatment group subjects fell asleep faster and slept up to 6 hours compared with a non-treated group.
Nausea and Vomiting[6]: Numerous studies show acupuncture is effective in decreasing nausea in patients having chemotherapy.
Clearly, there is some interesting research being done on acupuncture for some of the issues faced by women going through breast cancer treatment. Join us to hear more about acupuncture for women with breast cancer at our monthly education event on December 2, 2011 at 10 a.m. All breast cancer survivors and healthcare providers in the community are welcome. We hope you will come and hear more about this very interesting topic!

| Meet A Member of Our Staff & Board | |
Marcia Pearl, PT, PhD grew up in New York City and received her physical therapy education in Albany, NY. Upon graduation, Marcia worked with one of the first Open-Heart surgical teams in the country. In 1977, Marcia was recruited by Emory University to join the physical therapy faculty. After teaching for several years, Marcia held administrative positions at St. Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta, Georgia, Baptist Medical Center and Hillhaven Nursing Homes.
After earning her doctorate, Marcia returned to the academic world as Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at Georgia State University. In 2003, as Jill Binkley was forming TurningPoint, she asked Marcia to serve on the Board of Directors. As a breast cancer survivor and proponent of rehabilitation, Marcia eagerly accepted, and has been a member of the Board of Directors since its inception and currently serves as Chair.
| | Marcia, husband Art and Family |
After "retiring" from GSU, Marcia joined TurningPoint as a staff member, and obtained her certification in lymphedema management. Marcia loves working at TurningPoint because it allows her to use both her clinical skills and expertise in adult learning and, provides opportunities for teaching, research and writing.
When not at TurningPoint, Marcia enjoys traveling, cooking, reading, going to the symphony and theater, and spending time with her family, especially her four grandchildren. Marcia feels privileged to work with the outstanding staff at TurningPoint and appreciates the opportunity to help women with breast cancer. |
