Annual Campaign
Please Support TurningPoint's 2011 Annual Fundraising Campaign...

It has been a very exciting year for TurningPoint Women's Healthcare as we strive to continue our mission of providing, promoting and advocating specialized and evidence-based rehabilitation care for women with breast cancer. In 2011, TurningPoint will provide a total of over 3,000 physical therapy, massage therapy, counseling and nutrition visits; serve 300 new patients; and provide financial assistance to 46% of those served. And even more good news...TurningPoint is now part of the American Cancer Society's planning team to develop a model of rehabilitation services for breast cancer survivors! This is a huge step forward for women who are fighting and surviving breast cancer!

These accomplishments were realized thanks to our very generous donors. As we enter Breast Cancer Awareness month, I ask you to make a donation to TurningPoint. Your generous gift - of any amount - will give us the power to serve all women with breast cancer regardless of their ability to pay for services. It will provide much needed educational programs for patients and healthcare providers. Breast cancer does not discriminate...it affects all women - your next door neighbor, your sister, your best friend, your tennis partner, your mother, your daughter.

Thank you for your support in the past, and for considering our request for support once again,

Jill

Jill Binkley, Executive Director

Evidence Update: Weight Loss & Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Reviewing Some of the Research

Up to 60% of women report significant weight gain during and after breast cancer treatment. Studies have shown that an increase in body weight, or body mass index (BMI), is a risk factor for recurrent disease. In addition, breast cancer patients are at an increased risk for co-morbidities such as lymphedema and cardiovascular disease (CVD). But...we all know that weight loss can be difficult and frustrating.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is an intervention used to promote weight loss. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations, and events.  In other words, we can change the way we think to feel and act better even if the situation does not change.

One study by Rock et al. examined the effect of adding cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention to a weight loss program that included diet and exercise. Eighty-five overweight or obese breast cancer survivors were randomly assigned to the intervention or wait-list control group based on age and BMI. The intervention group received more education and CBT intervention on weight loss and physical activity than the wait-list group. The findings of this study suggest that participants in the intervention group had a greater decrease in BMI and blood lipid profiles improved. Overall this study does suggest the CBT intervention with diet modification and physical activity, can assist in weight loss and improve blood lipid profiles in overweight or obese breast cancer survivors.

Patient Perspective: Keeping Hope Alive
Alicia Maxwell and Husband
Alicia Maxwell and her husband, Bernard Moussa.

Recently, I graduated from the Georgia State Physical Therapy program, and I was thrilled. Over a year ago, the breast cancer I battled in 2008 returned, metastasizing and changing my life significantly. During this time I was finishing my second year of the Georgia State University Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. I wondered how I would be able to finish my third and final year. My aspiration to become a physical therapist became even more clear after numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. My experience as a patient fueled my desire to finish school and not let cancer deter my goals and dreams. My husband, Bernard, is with me every step of the way, along with my family, friends, and the faculty and students of the DPT program.

I was first was introduced to TurningPoint when Jill Binkley came into our class to introduce us to the role of rehabilitation in breast cancer. Jill explained to our class that educating healthcare professionals was part of TurningPoint's mission. TurningPoint also offers emotional and physical support that's unique to the community. The staff is well-versed and practiced in breast cancer support, whether it be for the treatment of lymphedema or providing a relaxing massage. Jill Binkley is a true advocate for the breast cancer community. She and the staff at TurningPoint provide physical therapy, massage therapy and other programs that are specific to women battling or living with breast cancer.

Meet TurningPoint's New Counselor*!

Karen Savrin, LCSW

I appreciate this opportunity to introduce myself. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 24 years of experience counseling individuals, couples, families and groups. I have worked in a variety of settings, including foster care/adoption, child protective services, and both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facilities. I have experience working with children, adolescents and adults, addressing concerns such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, life transitions, stress, parenting problems and childhood trauma issues. I am also in training to become a certified hypnotherapist. Currently, I have a private practice in Alpharetta and also work with Foothills Counseling Center, a non-profit counseling organization in Clarkesville, GA. It was at Foothills that I met Cynthia Johnston, TurningPoint's former counselor, and thus learned about TurningPoint. I developed an interest in working with breast cancer survivors after seeing several clients referred to me by Cynthia for counseling.

On a personal note, I was raised in New York City and moved to Atlanta in 1985. I have two daughters and a granddaughter. I sing in a top-ranked Sweet Adelines Chorus called Song of Atlanta and I love to jazzercise! I am excited to join TurningPoint and am looking forward to helping expand the counseling services offered to breast cancer survivors at this very special organization.

Karen

*TurningPoint's counseling services are complimentary and paid for through generous donors and grants. Karen meets with women on an individual basis and also leads our 'Coffee and Conversation' Group for women with metastatic breast cancer.
