| Inaugural Tourney for TurningPoint a Great Success! | |
On July 24th and 25th, TurningPoint Women's Healthcare hosted the inaugural Tourney for TurningPoint at Dunwoody Country Club. The two-day event featured a dinner, silent and live auction and a golf outing, all raising money for women in our community with breast cancer.
On Sunday evening, the Tourney for TurningPoint hosted more than 125 guests at an outstanding dinner and silent and live auction. On Monday, over 80 golfers participated in a golf scramble. Despite the threat of inclement weather, the outing hosted a competitive group of men and women golfers and everyone completed a successful round of golf.
The Tourney for TurningPoint could not have such a great success without the support of our sponsors: Ashford Advisors, Eastside Physicians Group, HA&W (Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, LLP), Peachtree Spine Physicians, PGA Tour Superstore, RBM of Atlanta, Trans Equity, Océ Business Solutions- A Canon Group Company, The Abney Family Foundation, Physician & Nurse Licensing Services, Jason's Deli, Fast Signs Norcross and Friends of Tami, Dana, Sue and Carla.

| Evidence Update: Yoga for Breast Cancer Patients Taking Aromatase Inhibitors | |
Yoga has been shown to be beneficial for women with breast cancer. One of the benefits of yoga may be to help eliminate arthralgia, or joint pain, associated with aromatase inhibitors.
What are Aromatase Inhibitors?
Aromatase inhibitors stop the production of estrogen in post-menopausal women. This means that less estrogen is available to stimulate the growth of hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer cells. There are three aromatase inhibitors: Arimidex (anastrozole), Aromasin (exemastane) and femara (letrozole).
What are some of the side effects of aromatase inhibitors?
Aromatase inhibitors have been shown to reduce breast cancer recurrence in women with hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer. There are several possible side effects that occur in some women taking this medication, including arthralgia, osteoporosis and heart problems. Ongoing screening for osteoporosis and heart issues is important for women on these drugs.
Is there any treatment for aromatase inhibitor-related arthralgia?
There has been little research done to examine treatments to reduce or prevent arthralgia. However, a recent pilot study examined the impact of yoga on function, pain, and quality of life for arthralgia associated with aromatase inhibitors.* Subjects for the study were 10 postmenopausal women with stage I to III breast cancer with arthralgia. A yoga program was provided twice a week for 8 weeks, along with a home program to be carried out for 15 minutes 3 times per week. The results of the study showed a significant reduction in pain, increase in function and improved balance and flexibility. This is a preliminary study that indicates a positive impact of yoga on joint pain that is associated with aromatase inhibitors. Further study is needed that uses a control group to compare how women improve with yoga versus no treatment.
Other research in breast cancer patients suggests that yoga may be able to help:
