The purpose of this class is to help women manage their weight, whether the goal is losing weight, maintaining ideal weight or simply improving healthy eating and exercise habits.

Evidence Update: Nutrition and Breast Cancer - What We Know and Future Directions

One of the most common questions I am asked by the patients at Turning Point is "What kind of diet do I need to be on to prevent my breast cancer from coming back?"  The American Cancer Society advocates food rather than supplements as the most important source of nutrients.  They also encourage a diet that limits alcohol and red meat consumption, and is rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.  Regular physical activity as well as achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight is also very important.

A new article in the March, 2011 edition of the American Dietetic Association Journal outlines recent research on nutrition for cancer survivors. It provides a great overview regarding the current research and information on diet for cancer survivors, in what areas we are lacking scientific evidence, and what research needs to be done in the future.  The authors examine the current evidence supporting nutrition recommendations and the role that dietitians can play in preventing cancer recurrence and managing chronic conditions prevalent in cancer survivors, as well as improving quality of life and decreasing health care costs. Ultimately evidence based nutrition guidelines for cancer survivors need to be developed, but we still need more research to achieve this goal.

The authors are interviewed in a podcast at: http://podcasts.elsevierhealth.com/yjada/yjada_pc_111_3.mp3.

A Man's Perspective: Bill Stubblefield, Board Member

A Warrior's Tale

Bill Stubblefield was planning a fabulous 40th wedding anniversary and surprise trip to New York City for his wife, Alice. As usual, every detail and minute was planned. Bill's time as an army captain involved in counter-intelligence and as a president and chairman of two NASDAQ traded companies, he was accustomed to always being in-charge and in control. But in 2007, a single sentence by his wife, "I have breast cancer", spun his world out of control. He prided himself on having quick solutions to problems. However this time, there were none.

Bill stayed positive after his wife's double mastectomy and accompanied her to every doctor's visit, chemo and radiation treatment, and asked a hundred questions of the medical professionals. Still, Bill felt loss. When Alice's doctors suggested she go to TurningPoint Women's Healthcare, he found not only help for his wife's lymphedema, but recognized a "strategic partner".

Bill Stubblefield and Judy Suggs

 Throughout Bill's business

 career, he had used

 "strategic partners" to

 capitalize on

 opportunities, expand his

 companies' capabilities

 and tackle tough product

 development challenges.

Now Bill felt he had an

 ally in TurningPoint.

(Judy Suggs, Pink Affair Chair and Bill at The Pink Affair)

Now Bill had someone to help him, and help his wife. As Alice explains in "Her Story" on TurningPoint's website, TurningPoint helped her physically and emotionally. Bill and Alice are once again enjoying golfing together, travelling to places like St. Lucia and spending many rich and happy days with their grandchildren Shayne and Jordynn Marguerite.

When Bill was approached about joining TurningPoint's board of directors, he responded with his usual directness. "I am flattered you asked, but I will only join if I believe I can bring something to the table". This is the rule Bill lived by when he joined other boards like Medical Graphics Corporation, Hilton Head Hospital and Volunteers in Medicine Clinic. Bill says he's still trying to fulfill that pledge by working to get TurningPoint the financial resources it needs to fulfill its mission. If you meet him, expect to be asked to contribute to TurningPoint!

Since joining the TurningPoint Board, Bill's passionate enthusiasm has contributed greatly to TurningPoint's success.

TurningPoint Women's Healthcare is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that maximizes quality of life for women with breast cancer by providing, promoting and advocating specialized and evidenced based rehabilitation.
