Evidence Update: Association Between Shoulder & Neck Pain, Limited Mobility, Depression, Body Image & Fatigue in Breast Cancer Survivors

A recent study investigated the relationships between fatigue, pain, reduced mobility and psychological factors in breast cancer survivors. Subjects in the study were 59 women who were an average of 12 months post-diagnosis. 82% of these breast cancer survivors reported some fatigue, with  32% reporting severe fatigue. The researchers found significant associations between fatigue, body image, shoulder motion, depression, and neck and shoulder pain. Body image, depression, neck pain intensity and shoulder motion were significant predictors of fatigue in breast cancer survivors. In other words, women affected by one or more of these issues were more likely to have fatigue.

Since rehabilitation strategies are focused on reducing pain and clinical repercussions from breast cancer, including fatigue, understanding potential determinants for fatigue may assist in the rehabilitation process in these patients. The study concluded that rehabilitation therapists and nurses working with women with breast cancer should take these relationships into account to potentially improve the management of cancer-related fatigue.

Patient Perspective: Massage Therapy

"Having cancer is not fun or pleasurable under any circumstances.  It is scary, the treatments are rough, the endless visits to doctors are tiresome, and honestly, some days there just isn't much to look forward to."

"However, once I came to TurningPoint, there was a "turning point" in my experience.  I first came for physical therapy for arm lymphedema.  Later, I was introduced to their massage practice and the 'Coffee and Conversation' support group for other Stage IV patients."

"Cancer patients carry a lot of stress in our bodies due to the trauma of having the diagnosis and the results of treatment.  Massage relaxes our body and is pleasurable.  It relaxes me and gives me something I can look forward to.  Dorlores is a wonderful massage therapist and a lovely, caring person.  Her massages have eased many of my body's symptoms and helped me to heal."
