This Week at Amana / December 22, 2011

Dear Amana Family Members,

As the half-way mark during the academic year, winter break is often a time for reflection. As a community we have achieved a lot during fall semester. Dr. Penelope Wong, our Expeditionary Learning School Designer, commented during Expedition Showcase that she thought, "The final products and display of student work were among the best ever at Amana." Teachers guided students to make meaningful connections across subject areas, beyond memorizing content from textbooks/worksheets. In some cases, students used their new-found knowledge to solve real-world problem problems and provide a service to others. For example, 8th grade students constructed a Hope House for homeless people using STEM concepts and wrote compelling proposals as part of their humanities lessons. At the other end of spectrum, Kindergarten students learned about Culture and sent Welcome to America brochures to a local school that sponsors refugee children. One particular group of students who deserve special recognition are those middle school students who filled in for parents unable to attend showcase by listening to younger students present their work; this is the magic of a K-8 format.

I am also proud of our families for their show of support for our new building project. We continue the search for Amana's permanent home with the knowledge that the opening statements of Amana's Charter still ring true, "A community of parents has emerged who recognize the value for their children to pursue education that positions them well academically & competitively, encourages them to bridge cultural gaps, and allows them to affect positive change in society."

Wishing you all a wonderful break and holiday season!

Sincerely,

Ehab Jaleel

RECOGNITIONS

Middle School Teachers Awarded Grants for Resources
Congratulations to Cherisse Campbell, whose Donors Choose grant has been successfully funded! Her grant will provide STEM lab equipment to help the eighth grade expedition investigations be more quantitative.  The equipment includes humidity and light sensors that can be used to collect data on their TI-84 calculators.

Congratulations also goes to sixth grade STEM teacher Liz Korthof, who received her grant for a "classroom library of books on bullying and character development as well classroom activities to use during morning meeting to help the kids learn how to be better advocates for others and to help them learn how to make difficult social decisions."

Both of these grants align perfectly with Amana's mission and vision and are two of several resources that the Amana Crew has received this year as a result of successfully funded grants through Donors Choose. We're proud of our Crew's positive attitudes and resourcefulness!

CRCT Resources Available

We have Coach CRCT workbooks on sale at our Reception Desk.  We offer each tested subject (Reading/ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies) for each tested grade level 3rd to 8th.  One workbook is $20. Coach does not make its workbooks available to the general public. So, if we have run out of certain subjects or grade levels, Ms. Shibly will keep a waitlist and once at least 11 people sign up, we can purchase a bulk order. This is a good resource for parents who want their child to practice at home, or during longer holiday times.

Our teachers have also provided students with their OAS (Online Assessment System) CRCT practice test log-ins. Students in grades 3-8 are assigned practice tests in each subject area for either classwork or homework. However, parents can also use these log-ins to assign practice from a computer at home.

Our Expeditionary Learning model combines engaging content in the Social Studies and Science GPS with skills in Math, Reading, and Language Arts to prepare students for all types of assessments, including CRCT.  Your students are preparing indirectly every day, and extra practice on the CRCT format gives them more confidence to do well on that high-stakes test too.

Please let me know if you have any questions and thank you for supporting your child's education.

Best regards,

Director of Curriculum and Instruction
