This Week at Amana / October 3-7, 2011 |
|
Dear Amana Family Members,
If a picture is worth a thousand words, can you tell how happy we were last Thursday when at the Annual Georgia Charter Schools Conference in Macon we learned that Amana was chosen The Coca-Cola Foundation's 2011 Georgia Charter School of the Year?
 | | Tony Roberts (Ga Charter Schools Assoc. CEO) and Holly Mattingly (Coca-Cola Community Partnerships Director) with Amana delegation |
With nearly 400 people attending last week's conference, including State Schools Superintendent John Barge and Georgia School Board Member Linda Zechmann, it was an honor to receive this award, which reflects our commitment to academic excellence, operational sustainability, and sound fiscal practices.
Click here to learn more about how we received this honor. This recognition would not be possible without our amazing students, talented staff, and supportive families. I personally want to thank Jelena Naim, Pam Holloway and Andrea Cooper Gatewood for helping with the application. Lastly, thank you parents for the congratulatory emails and phone calls after learning we won. Now we need to celebrate this accomplishment - stay tuned!
Sincerely,
Ehab Jaleel
Executive Director |

Help Us Track Your Volunteer Hours
Research shows that schools with the highest levels of parental involvement perform better. Of course, Amana parents ALWAYS score at the top of the list when it comes to parental volunteer support, but we need your help tracking the time you donate to the school via our online tracking database available on the Amana website (under the "PIE" tab). As you know, Amana requires a minimum of ten (10) volunteers hours per household per year, but most families typically give much, much more. And the volunteer data you help us record serves as part of your child's permanent record at Amana, plus it helps us win grants and recognition at the local and national level, so please do not forget to log your hours TODAY! Click here to visit the Volunteer Hours Tracking Log and thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to your child's academic success. |

Box Tops Deadline is Just Around the Corner!
As you know, Amana actively participates in the general Mills Box Tops for Education program each year and there are two submission deadlines we have to meet - the end of October and the end of February. Our school coordinator is preparing to send in all our Box Tops received since the beginning of the school year in order to meet the first submission deadline on October 31.
Now is the time to gather up all those Box Tops you've been saving and put them together to send in to school! If you've asked any friends or family members to help you collect Box Tops, ask them for their Box Tops too and thank them for helping to make a difference.
When you are gathering your Box Tops, it will help our coordinator if you cut them out neatly along the dotted lines and "bundle" them in groups of 10, 25, or 50.
Even if you only have a few, it's important to send them in ASAP! Remember, each Box Top is worth 10˘ to our school - and that adds up fast when every family participates! If you want to know how to save more Box Tops in the future, see the list of Participating Products and All About Box Tops pages. Thank you for your support! |
Come Wave Your Flag at Amana's International Festival!
We are currently preparing for Amana's second annual International Festival! The Cultural Display Committee is seeking volunteers from the community to host International Booths, representing different cultures and countries from around the world.
The booths will provide visitors with information on culture, beliefs, history, economics, etc. and provide activities for the youth and adults during the festival. Additionally, a "Booth Contest" will be held to award the best booths in categories to be announced.
The second annual International Festival will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Amana. The International Booths were a tremendous success last year, and we look forward to working with you in expanding our understanding of different cultures and sharing this unique experience with our community!

Our "Spanish Club" is geared for children ages 5 to 14 years with little or no prior experience with the Spanish language. Registration fee, including materials, is $9 per week, $105 for a three-month session and $209 for an entire six months. Calling All Crew Parents
It takes quite a bit of effort on the part of parent volunteers to support the amazingly rich and interactive learning that takes place inside our classrooms. Amana Crew Parents are often the teacher's right-hand supporters and lead organizers of classroom events but we encourage ALL parents to volunteer to help with whatever function that most appeals to your talents.
We have a few classes that are still in need of Crew Parents (Room Parents). Please ask your child's teacher if they need assistance and if you do not know who your child's Crew Parent is, please let us know. For additional information about the roles and responsibilities of an Amana Crew Parent, contact Dominique Booker, Parent Crew Coordinator (PCC), at amanacpc@gmail.com. Thank you for your support! |
Red Ribbon Week Coming to Amana
Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country and takes place in schools all across America during the month of October. Red Ribbon Week serves as a vehicle for schools to take a stand for the hopes and dreams of our children through a commitment to drug prevention and education and a personal commitment to live drug free lives with the ultimate goal being the creation of drug free America. In celebration of this time honored tradition, Amana's PE department will be creating a mural in conjunction with a series of "spirit" activities the last week of this month.
You can share in the excitement of the Red Ribbon campaign at home by encouraging your child to participate in the 2012 Red Ribbon Theme Contest. Entries must be received by December 1st, 2011 via email to info@nfp.org or via mail to National Family Partnership, 2490 Coral Way, Miami, FL 33145. Please include your name, school, telephone number and email address. Winners will be notified by December 15, 2011. All entries become property of the National Family Partnership.
