Dear Amana Families and Community Members,
Friday May 6th's Nature Hero & Endangered Species parade and picnic was the culmination of week long celebration of Amana's Environmental Science Education program. Students from different grade levels took over Amana's main hallways and cafeteria to display charts and graphs measuring the school's progress on environmental actions and implications to climate change. What really inspired me was the passion our students exhibited as they used data to advocate the opportunities each of us has for making a difference.
Our first Earth Week at Amana was a huge success that we can build on for the future. Congratulations to Ms. Brooke Heimerl, EEOB Teacher, and her 7th grade students for organizing the entire week's activities. Pictures from the event are available below and on our website.
Sincerely,
Ehab Jaleel,
Executive Director

Three Amana Students Win the State Math Kangaroo Olympiad! |
We have three state level winners of the 2011 Math Kangaroo Olympiad! Husnain Raza (5th), Hasan Raza (7th), and Abdullah Budeir (8th) had one of the TOP three results at their level of participation in the entire state of Georgia! These students are invited to the award ceremony on May 22 and will then have the opportunity to go on to compete at the international level for summer camp opportunities and future college scholarships.
The Math Kangaroo Competition history stretches back several decades. In the 1980's, Peter O'Halloran, an Australian mathematician and teacher, began a popular mathematical competition in his country. The test was open to anyone who wanted to participate, and included engaging and thought-provoking questions which stemmed from mathematical areas of knowledge including algebra, geometry, and logic. In 1991, this idea was taken up in Paris. The competition began to be called "Kangaroo" because of its Australian origin. Very quickly, it spread throughout Europe, and presently over 5 million students in over fourty countries throughout the world take part.

We are so proud of all of our 2011 Math Kangaroo Olympiad participants. A special thank you goes out to Ms. Savova, the coaches and parents for their support of our students. You have made mathematics fun and exciting for so many bright, young minds! |
Earth Week Photos on our Website |
During Earth Week, students presented data and findings from Ms. Brooke Heimerl's Environmental Science classes, and they offered audiences solutions to environmental challenges. As a public school, Amana is fortunate to be able to offer all students deeper knowledge related to environmental sciences, coursework usually only available to top private schools. Earth Week also allowed Amana students to be creative and improve their presentation skills.
Our students are gaining valuable appreciation, knowledge and technical skills for their futures in college and beyond in addressing increasing environmental concerns locally and globally.
You can view 90+ pictures from Earth Week on our website by clicking here (Home Page>Academics>Photo Album).

Immunizations Required for All Sixth Grade Students |
The State of Georgia has established immunization requirements for students entering Kindergarten and the sixth grade. Please check with your medical professional to see if your child may require additional immunizations in order to stay enrolled in middle school. If your child does not have the required vaccinations and a complete 3231 (State of GA immunizations form) on file at the school, your child will not be allowed to attend the first day of middle school for 2011-2012.
Please do not wait until the end of the summer to get your child immunized as this is one of the busiest times of year. Schedule your child's immunizations TODAY and thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions about your child's immunization requirements, please contact our school Data Clerk, Sheryl Hale.

Library books are now due. Please remind your child/ren to return library books to our media center as soon as possible. Students who have library materials that are overdue received a notice on Monday, April 25th. Parents and guardians will be billed for books that are not returned to school before the end of the school year. If an overdue charge is still outstanding at the start of school in August, students will have their library loan privileges suspended until the fee has been settled. Any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Melissa Singh. Thank you for your cooperation!

Grace Simone Morrow's White House Easter Egg Roll Adventure! |
Amana Academy seventh grader, Grace Simone Morrow, attended the White House Easter Egg Roll thanks to her godmother, Leslie Saunders, and the Georgia Democratic Party. Grace delighted in being on the South Lawn of the White House as Willow Smith performed at the annual Easter Egg Roll. Seated in the fifth row at the concert, Grace was thankful for her height because she had a great view of Willow's performance and the first row w here First Lady Michelle Obama, Malia and Sasha sat along with Willow's family - Will, Jada and Jaden! After the awesome concert, Grace had the opportunity to meet Willow's mother, Jada Pinkett Smith and the new Los Angeles boy's group, Mindless Behavior (pictured on the left), also touring with Willow Smith.

As an aspiring photographer, Grace took some fantastic photos of Jada Pinkett Smith, Mindless Behavior and First Lady Michelle Obama's vegetable garden. Grace will always remember this once-in-a- lifetime experience at the White House and now she has the photos to prove it! Congratulations Grace on being honored as a guest at the White House and we thank your mother Marquita and aunt Leslie for all the great work they are doing in the community! |
