This Week at Amana...
May 2-6, 2011

Dear Amana Families and Community Members,

In next week's newsletter I promise we will share reflections on all the exciting presentations and activities our students have done as part of Earth Week.  For now, I want to a moment to congratulate a few of our students.  First, congratulations to our 8th grade National History Day Competition team for their win at the state championship in Macon, Georgia last Saturday!  The team now heads to Washington D.C. for the national competition.   Best wishes!

I also want to congratulate elementary students who were invited to meet Governor Nathan Deal this past Monday May 2nd as he announced the start of National Charter Schools Week.  Amana was only one of a few schools chosen for this honor.

Sincerely,

Ehab Jaleel,

2011-2012 Middle School Math Placement Exams

Test Taking HandAmana middle school students have the opportunity to qualify for advanced/accelerated math.  Selected rising Amana middle school students will take the Math Acceleration Placement test this week to place them appropriately for next year.  Fifth grade students will be notified by their teacher.  Selection is determined by CRCT math scores (Level 3) or the student's winter 2011 math scores (80th percentile and above).  Parents will receive a letter from the Director of Curriculum and Instruction shortly after the test notifying them of the placement test results.  If you have any questions about the process, or if you are not sure if your child qualifies, please contact Jelena Naim, Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

Calling All Overdue Library Books

Library Books ImageLibrary books are now due.  Please remind your child/ren to return library books to our media center as soon as possible.  Students who have library materials that are overdue received a notice on Monday, April 25th.  Parents and guardians will be billed for books that are not returned to school before the end of the school year.  If an overdue charge is still outstanding at the start of school in August, students will have their library loan privileges suspended until the fee has been settled.  Any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Melissa Singh.  Thank you for your cooperation!

Amana Student Meets President Obama

White House Easter Egg Hunt_Gabrielle GatewoodAmana Academy fourth grader, Gabrielle Gatewood, celebrates Easter with a special Easter Egg Hunt in Washington, DC!  This past month, Gabrielle Gatewood received a special invitation to attend this annual event on the White House South Lawn.  The White House Easter Egg Roll is an annual family event to hunt for and race Easter Eggs on the White House Lawn while enjoying storytelling and a visit with the Easter Bunny.  The holiday tradition has a long history dating back to 1878 when President Rutherford B. Hayes officially opened the White House grounds to local children for egg rolling on Easter Monday.  Successive Presidents have continued the tradition of inviting children to the White House Lawn for egg rolling and other activities and entertainment.

White House Easter Egg Roll 2011This year's  event featured the theme of "Get Up and Go!" promoting health and wellness with activities that encouraged children to lead healthy and active lives and follow the First Lady's 'Let's Move!' initiative.  Gabrielle was treated to a story time where the the First Family read two books.  Mrs. Obama showed off some culinary skills - flipping a crepe in a pan in the "kid's kitchen" with TV personality Kelly Ripa and Chef Jacques Pepin.  The First Lady said that her youngest daughter Sasha's favorite thing to do is to spend time in the kitchen.  The day was made complete with a tour of the White House vegetable garden and a brief look at the White House basketball court where President Obama played a mini-game with the Harlem Globetrotters including the Amazing Race contestant, Flight Time.  So that the day would always be remembered, Gabrielle left with a souvenir wooden egg signed by both President and Mrs. Obama.

Second Grade Projects Promote Real World Connections

Second graders are learning about economics: bartering, cash, scarcity, supply and demand.  The children were "bartering cards" in which they were the "producer" of the item on the card.  They were required to "barter" in order to obtain a school supply list that was written on the board.  The students quickly found that bartering is difficult based on what you have to trade and that they needed to make economic choices in order to obtain what they needed.  The students realized that using MONEY would have been much easier!

Also, Mrs. Casal and Mrs. Raina's classes are selling a book Haikus for Hope to aide the relief effort in Japan.  The books are composed of the student's art work and haiku poetry.  Please contact Mrs. Raina or Mrs. Casal if you are interested in ordering a book.  Books are $15.00 each.

Thank you!

Of course, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher directly, or any one of our administrative team members or Governing Board members.  We're all interested in hearing from you at any time you need or want to speak with us.  Amana's main number is (678) 624-0989 and you may also find email contact information for all of our faculty and staff by visiting the Amana Staff Directory.

On behalf of the Governing Board, the Amana faculty and staff, and the school administration, thank you for entrusting your child's education to us.  With your continued support, we'll continue to mold the very best and brightest global leaders within our community.  What an amazing journey!  Thank you for making it possible and worthwhile.

Sincerely,

Ehab Jaleel
