Dear Amana Families and Community Members,
Last week, I had the honor of reading 'bedtime stories' to elementary students at the Northpoint Barns & Noble Bookstore PIE Family Fun event. Also reading were Mr. Credi, Mrs. Lambert, eighth grade student Allanis Otranto and Alumnus Kamela Jafaar. Thank you Carrie Doulfikhar, our PIE Family Fun Chair, for organizing such a special community event!
As we near the end of CRCT testing, I want to remind parents that next week is Amana's "Earth Week", which allows students t

Dress Code Changing in 2011-2012 - Getting Even Better! |
In an effort to streamline our current dress code and ensure equity and uniformity across all grade levels, our administration and a diverse group of PIE leaders have been meeting on a regular basis to discuss uniform improvements for next year (one change will be that middle school grades will have distinct uniforms from elementary). In the meantime, we ask our families to please refrain from making uniform purchases until the new dress code is announced. We anticipate releasing the 2011-2012 dress code requirements on or before May 16th. Thank you.

Time to Return All Library Books |
Library books are now due. Please remind your child/ren to return library books to our media center as soon as possible. Students who have library materials that are overdue received a notice this past Monday, April 25th. Parents and guardians will be billed for books that are not returned to school before the end of the school year. If an overdue charge is still outstanding at the start of school in August, students will have their library loan privileges suspended until the fee has been settled. Any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Melissa Singh. Thank you!

Minerals, Gems and Rocks, Oh My - Third Grade Geology Expedition |
Amana third graders visited the Tellus Museum in Cartersville, GA last week for an in depth, scientific exploration of rocks and minerals. The world famous Weinman Mineral Gallery was the most impressive exhibit of all! These galleries were full of real life examples of how minerals are used today. A particular favorite was the large plexi-glass wall of cubes representing each element from the Periodic Table along with a product that is made from that element. There was special exhibit of phosphorescent minerals that glowed in the dark, and while our students stood in front of the exhibit, the lights switched from regular to black light and back so that they could can see the minerals change before their eyes. All throughout the galleries were cases full of rare gems, minerals, and rocks, and students were even given the opportunity to pan for gems to take home and add to their own private collections. Students were also given the opportunity to visit the museum's mineral laboratory where they were tested with a series of exciting classification exercises. Tellus museum staff were highly impressed with our students' knowledge as they answered all of the questions posed with lightning speed and their responses often went above and beyond what was typical of students their age. The Tellus experience was the ultimate way to show our third grade students the importance of science and we can't wait to go again next year!
