We did it! Fun Walk Raises $20,000!
We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the 100+ parents, students, faculty, staff, and sponsors who braved the weather and came out in support of the Verizon Fun Walk this past Saturday. We exceeded our goal of $10,000 which will be fully matched by the Verizon for a total of $20,000!!! What a huge success to have raised so much in such a short time to benefit Amana's emerging STEM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)! Click here to see slideshow of the event.
We thank our other sponsors Odwalla and Kenari for the delicious refreshments; and thank Khadeejah Farooq, our Volunteer Support Coordinator, Sheheen Bharde, our PIE Vice President, and Liz Lambert, Amana's Business Manager, for an outstanding job coordinating the set-up. We also thank Carrie Dhoulfikar and Tenille Adams for their amazing marketing support.
Finally, we'd like to send a special THANK YOU to all of the Amana families employed by the Verizon corporation - ISSAM DALLOUL, TARIQ KHAN, ANILA KHAN, LAQUETTA KELLEY, and SHIRJEEL MIRZA. Without your support, this event would not have been possible! Thank you Verizon! We look forward to working with you again next year.
For those who donated at the Stewardship Circle and STEM Explorers levels, we will be scheduling "Principal for a Day" oportunities for your children and sending you coffee mugs depending on your donations. Coupons for Just Fitness will also be sent.

Scholastic Book Fair Brings in Record Sales
Thank you Amana for the overwhelming response you showed this past week to the Scholastic Book Fair. We sold more than $6000 in books which not only represents a more than DOUBLE increase in sales from previous years, but says a lot about our community's commitment to literacy! Your generous participation has raised more than $3000 in Scholastic Bucks toward our media center!!! It was particularly heartwarming to see the 100+ community members come out on Wednesday, March 30th for the Donuts With Dad event. This incredible show of support meant a lot to our students, so thank you again for your support and for encouraging your children to read!
We would like to extend a special THANK YOU to Julie Waugh and all of the Book Fair crew for making this year's campaign such a success! Plans are underway to host the Book Fair again in the fall in conjunction with the International Festival.

New Echota Field Study - History Comes Alive for Our Second Graders
Second graders traveled to the New Echota Indian Reservation and National Park this past week for an in-depth field study to extend their studies of the Cherokee Indians; one of Georgia's largest Indian tribes.
During its short history, New Echota was the site of the first Indian language newspaper office, a court case which carried to the U.S. Supreme Court, one of the earliest experiments in national self government by an Indian tribe, the signing of a treaty which relinquished Cherokee claims to lands east of the Mississippi River, and the assembly of Indians for removal west on the infamous Trail of Tears.
During the field study, our second graders were immersed in Cherokee Indian culture. They experienced traditional farming techniques and tribal living conditions, learned about Cherokee government, dress, music and dietary practices, how the Cherokee formed relationships with European settlers, along with the adoptations they made over the course of the past century. What a fascinating journey into the world of authentic Native American culture right in our own back yard!
Thank you!
