This past Tuesday, I decided to join my daughter Noor's third grade class on their field study to the Consolidated Gold Mine in Dahlonega about an hour north of Alpharetta. The bus was full, so I and other chaparones carpooled behind the bus. You would never know the weather was rainy and cold seeing our students bound off the bus eager to experience the mine and learn from experts about geology and minerals. On the way home, our carfull reflected on the uniquness of Amana and the value of students getting engaged in fieldwork such as this trip to a real mine.
In a world where schools are taking away field trips, we cherish the fact that our teachers offer students opportunities to learn from fieldwork, experts, and service in addition to learning from text. Students become active investigators using the research tools, techniques of inquiry, and standards of presentation used by professionals in the field. The lessons are priceless.
I thank our parents for their financial commitment to our field studies, and I invite you to next Wednesday's cafe conversation at 8am with Mrs. Naim where the topic will be about the middle school version of fieldwork including Science and Humanities Missions.

Amana Third Graders are Becoming Budding Geologists!
On Tuesday, March 15, 2011, our third grade students journey north to the Consolidated Gold Mines in Dahlonega, GA. They panned for precious gemstones and had the opportunity to decend deep into the earth to explore a real gold mine. Students learned a great deal about geology, engineering and mining techniques, and the Gold Rush era in Georgia. Our students will never forget the field study experience they had in Dahlonega!
Math Puzzle - Courtesy of 7th Grade Accelerated Math Class
Here is a number trick for you courtesy of Mrs. Ansari's seventh grade accelerated math class:
1. Write down your favorite number 2. Multiply it by 4 3. Add 10 4. Divide by 2 5. Subtract twice your original number (2 times your original number)
What number did you get? Wait, don't tell me... you got 5 !
Am I right? How did I know?
It's based on algebra! The students in Mrs. Ansari's seventh grade math class have learned a lot of amazing math this year and recently came with their very own math tricks to show their mastery of algebraic principles. The number trick above was created by seventh grader Muhammad Hajaj.
Here's how it works:
1. Let N = your favorite number 2. Multiplying it by 4 = 4N 3. Adding 10 = 4N + 10 4. Dividing by 2 = 4N + 10 = 2N + 5 ------------ 2 5. Subtracting twice (2 times) your favorite (original number) = 2N + 5 - 2N = 5
See? No matter what number you choose, you always get 5! Neat, huh? Tune in next week for another student created number trick.
Thank you!

We'll have some of the organizers and participants in attendance to share the deep scientific inquiry learning that went on, as well as project work and team building. See you there!
