Dear Amana Families and Community Members,
95%...that's the highest rate of Amana families ever who said they were reenrolling the following year during our recent recommitment period.
We are honored to be able to continue to meet the unique needs of our students and we thank you all for your prompt completion of the enrolment forms and returning them to the school prior to the January 31st deadline. If you have reenrolment questions, please contact Sherryl Hale via email or by calling the school's main number.
Our 2011-2012 waiting list is also growing fast. We will hold our admission lottery on Monday, February 14th and our second Open House on Saturday, February 26th, from 11:30 am-1:00 pm. Please be sure to invite your friends and family members to attend the Open House and learn what sets Amana apart from all other schools!
Sincerely,
Ehab Jaleel,
Executive Director

ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS | |
Amana Welcomes New Board Members |
The Amana Academy Governing Board proudly announces and welcomes its newest board members:
- Andrea Cooper Gatewood (2 year term)
- Kristina Leidner-Eisenhardt (3 year term)
- Lloyd Smith (2 year term)
- Calvin Stamps (2 year term)
These four parents possess the perfect qualifications to serve the Amana Academy community. The current board members are looking forward to working with them this year.
We would also like to thank the outgoing board members, Lynn Hedgepeth and Tracy Blair, for the outstanding dedication and contributions they made to the board and to Amana Academy during their terms this past year. Our board members have an extraordinary dedication to our school. Too often we forget about the personal sacrifices they routinely make. Too often we forget about the important role our board members play in influencing how our school is governed. Too often the efforts of our board members go unrecognized and unrewarded. So THANK YOU to all our current and past board members for all that you have given to our school!
Don't forget, one of the best ways to get involved in your children's education is to attend the monthly board meetings. Our next meeting is Saturday, February 26 at 9:00am and we look forward to seeing you there! |
PIE Bowling Night - Oh What Fun! |
What a huge success! We had over 120 community members and friends come out this past Friday to show their skills on the bowling lane. Although there were some gutter balls, we all had a blast! Thank you all that attended this wonderful event!
Be on the look out for our next exciting PIE Family Fun event scheduled in March. |
Roswell Roots Festival in Full Swing |
February is Black History Month and to celebrate, Roswell is hosting the 10th Annual Roswell Roots festival throughout the month. Roswell Roots is the largest and most comprehensive Black History celebration in the state of Georgia and celebrates black history and culture by sponsoring a variety of art exhibits, history and cultural events.
For more information, please visit the Roswell Roots webpage.
Our school will be hosting a special guest speaker on February 25th Community Circle to showcase Black Histroy. More on that in our next installment of This Week at Amana. |
Box Tops Deadline on February 25th |
Help Amana reach its Box Tops earnings' goal this year! Search your cupboards, refrigerator and freezer for all the Box Tops you have in your kitchen. Then send them to school in a sealed baggie/envelope on or before February 25th (collection box located in the front office). This will give our PIE Fundraising coordinator time to collect, count and mail in our Box Tops before the February 28th cutoff date. Thank you for your continued support!

Verizon Fun Run on March 26th | We are very fortunate to have the Verizon Fun Walk coming to our school in March as a result of our parents who are Verizon employees. This is an excellent health-promoting fundraising opportunity for our school, as Verizon will match up to $10,000 in donations. We will send out more information regarding the Fun Walk in the coming weeks. All of the money that is collected for this event will support our future STEM Education initiatives. Your support in this endeavor with getting as many people signed up as possible will be greatly appreciated! |

To sign your child up for afterschool CRCT prep, please complete the CRCT enrollment form and turn this into the front office care of Ruxsana Shibley.

Girls Running Club Celebrates Their Coach |
The nearly two dozen participants and well-wishers from the Running Club staged a baby shower this past week for their volunteer coach Mrs. Julia Guy. Mrs. Guy was one of Amana's founding-year teachers before becoming a youth minister at her church in Buckhead. She continues to serve our students through her volunteer efforts with the running club. Congratulations Mrs. Guy and best wishes on the birth of your baby! P.S. She does not know the gender :)

Science Comes Alive in Third Grade |
On Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011, Amana third grade students hosted an expert from High Touch High Tech. The expert visitor, Scientist K, performed a number of 'thermal energy' experiments with the students where they were given the opportunity to test different metal forms in order to see which one was a better heat conductor. Students also participated in an amazing experiment in which they created a water volcano. Our students loved all of the wonderful hands-on experiments and inquiry-based dialogue, and we were indeed fortunate to be able to provide our third graders with these exciting scientific activities aligned with our semester's "Big Rocks" expedition.

Gabrielle Gatewood Performs for Congressman John Lewis |
Over 100 North Fulton community members came together to enjoy an afternoon of music, spoken word and dance at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. Featured at the performance was the Spirit of Praise Dance group from Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church and our very own, Gabrielle Gatewood (pictured on the left), daughter of Andrea Cooper Gatewood (Amana Governing Board member) and Von Gatewood. Joining the many local Roswell artisans on the Groveway program was Congressman John Lewis who asked the audience to continue to remember the many heroes that had preceded them and to continue to be active and involved in their communities.

Small Group Learning Addresses Individual Needs |
Learning at Amana is not just a word, rather, a responsibility that teachers and students grow with in a secure and warm environment. Yes, Amana teachers deliver the message, however students are the ones who unfold it. Teachers give students the tools, but the students are the ones who think, reason, and choose their different ways of learning. At Amana, students are provided with the best learning experiences because we believe in their potential and in what they can give. Students are trusted with the gifts that have been given to them and that have made each of them unique, just like Amana is.
Here are pictures of students working in small group centers in Arabic, sharing the learning and helping each other. Teachers at Amana are aware of their students' differences, and this is why many of our classroom activities are conducted in small or individual learning centers to better meet their levels and needs.
