This Week at Amana...
Jan. 31-Feb 4, 2011

Dear Amana Families and Community Members,

This past Wednesday night we hosted the first of two Open Houses, which exceeded our expectations!  Dozens of families toured the school, spoke to current teachers and students, heard from graduates, and learned about what makes Amana unique for Fulton County. One family commented to me, "Your students are really smart and such good communicators."  I got great feedback from everyone, and some nervous questions about the upcoming lottery on the 14th.  We can expect to have a larger Open House event on Saturday the 26th at 11:30 AM.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this effort, including our 5th grade student docents, alumni (5 came!), board members, PIE leaders, teachers, front office staff, and administrators.  You all really shined last night.

Sincerely,

Ehab Jaleel,

Executive Director

Environmental Club News

E-Club Photo_2011

Amana middle school Environmental-Club ambassador Lindsay Thomas and secretary Diba Moghaddari together with the crew have done a fantastic job planning and advancing new environmental initiatives for Amana Academy.  Among their achievements is the development of a fundraising campaign that will benefit Amana by raising money through smart recycling practices.  The E-Club has established a partnership with Cartridge World and the crew is collecting used ink cartridges around the school to submit to the Cartridge World organization in return for cash.  Also, the E-Club is busy collecting used batteries and is actively looking for recycling solutions for them.  The E-Club is continuing to work with the Terra Cycle Organization that turns everyday trash into new products and provides payment to the contributing school.  The E-Club hopes these proceeds will go to fund their new initiatives, so please begin sending in your spent toner cartridges, batteries and cell phones.

The E-Club is also working to secure an Ace environmental grant for Amana. Acquisition of this grant requires a number of steps and the E-Club is currently focusing on choosing their project track.  In addition, the E-Club is launching several other initiatives which include establishing a "trash cops" organization where students will take on the role of insuring that recyclable waste is not disposed  at lunch time - their goal is zero waste!

E-Club members are also trying to find opportunities to raise money to stop animal poaching and are interested in becoming advocates for animal rights. Finally, the E-Club crew is considering the idea of creating a line of eco-friendly products.  We are very proud our E-Club crew and the work they do to make Amana shine!   If you or someone you know would like to help support the Amana E-Club, feel free to contact Peter Epstein, Amana's E-Club adviser.

THANK YOU

Of course, if you ever have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher directly, or any one of our administrative team members or Governing Board members.  We're all interested in hearing from you at any time you need or want to speak with us.  Amana's main number is (678) 624-0989 and you may also find email contact information for all of our faculty and staff by visiting the Amana Staff Directory.

On behalf of the Governing Board, the Amana faculty and staff, and the school administration, thank you for entrusting your child's education to us.  With your continued support, we'll continue to mold the very best and brightest global leaders within our community.  What an amazing journey!  Thank you for making it possible and worthwhile.
