Dear Amana Families and Community Members,
Welcome back to a new year! We hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable winter break. Lots of stories have been heard around the school of winter vacations, family travel and outdoor adventures. It was also magical to hear the excitement and renewed energy in the teachers' voices this past Tuesday during our all-day professional development session. Teachers calibrated on social curriculum expectations and intervention strategies, and they began work on second semester learning expeditions and CRCT preparedness. Teachers also received an orientation on STEM Education.
| Teachers Planning for 2nd Semester |

After an incredibly busy December, with Showcase Night activities and frigid temperatures repeatedly interrupting our activities, we are all excited to get down to some serious work again. Each teacher has new investigations and field studies to unfold, including a major project-based expedition at each grade level.
Our upcoming expeditions are exciting opportunities for our students to dig deeply into a science or social studies topic, expanding language, reading, and writing skills and incorporating service, character and often environmental education. Students will use research, teamwork, critical thinking, and reflection to develop a broad range of understandings and abilities in pursuit of solving an overarching "guiding" question or problem presented by our teachers. These units last several weeks, and occur alongside ongoing math, reading and spelling instruction. They should be launching within the next few weeks.
A new year has arrived and a renewed spirit surrounds the children, faculty and staff... Let's get started!
Sincerely,
Ehab Jaleel,
Executive Director

New Elementary School Dismissal Policy |
A mana has the largest carpool in Fulton County, yet we complete it within 20 minutes or less on most afternoons. Due to safety and fairness concerns, starting Tuesday January 11th, we ask that ALL PARENTS picking up elementary students from the rear of the building REMAIN AT THEIR CARS and NOT walk-up to the fenced safety zone with their carpool numbers asking for their children.
Even though the number of parents doing this is small, it does disrupt our procedure and causes frustration among other parents who patiently wait in the carpool line. If parents choose to ignore this policy (we hope not), then we will simply call their child's number after all others.
TIP: If you are arriving way before 3:00 PM dismissal, you may be waiting more than you have to. Students enjoy socializing after school with their friends; and those parents who arrive closer to 3:15 PM seem to breeze through carpool on normal days. Remember, students not picked up before 3:25 are taken to the front of the building for late pick-up. |

Reenrollment Deadline is January 31st! |
Thank you to those parents who already submitted their 2011-2012 enrollment recommitment forms. We are pleased to report that most of the forms are in; however, if you have not taken the time to inform us in writing that your child will be returning next year, by law, we must assign your child's space to students on the open enrollment waitlist.
We've had a high level of new student enrollment application submissions this past month (in comparison with last year). In fact, some families did not even wait until the fall to join us...they enrolled midyear! Enrollment process information, applications, tour schedules, lottery dates, etc, are all available via the Amana website.
Please do not forfeit your child's space next year because of failure to submit your recommitment form. It's a simple, online form that you can complete in two minutes or less! To access the form, please visit the Amana reenrollment webpage. |
MAP Test Results are in, and Fulton Schools is Interested... |
Parents, you should have received from your teacher the results of your child's MAP test that was administered in December. To answer questions you may have about MAP testing and your child's performance, please check in with your teacher and click here to access the Parent Toolkit.
Amana has been a forerunner with the most experience using MAP testing in Fulton County Schools. Dr. Wayne Bellcross, the system's Chief Assessment and Accountability Officer, thanked Amana for offering insight into MAP uses, as his office is "looking for how well the MAP data aligns with other measures currently in use in Fulton with an eye toward broader use of the MAP test within the system."
The MAP assessment, Measure of Academic Progress, tests K-8th grade students on Reading, English Language Arts, and Math in a computer-adaptive test. MAP assessments are created by a respected non-profit educational organization and administered both nationally and internationally.
As a member of the MAP network, we benefit by comparing our students with national standards, have access to state-of-the-art computer-adaptive tests, and receive a variety of high-quality results reports which will inform instruction in a much more pro-active, targeted manner. Our staff is excited to have this feedback in a very teacher-friendly format for use during our planning sessions. |

Success & Failure - January's Design Principle |
As part of Amana's social curriculum, we highlight a different Expeditionary Learning Design Principle each month.
| 2nd Grade Students at Library |
To support this initiative, Ms. Singh, our Library Media Specialist, selects book titles that highlight each theme. This month's E.L. Design Principle is Success and Failure:
"All students need to be successful if they are to build the confidence and capacity to take risks and meet increasingly difficult challenges."
|
Ethical Character in Action |
During the first semester, Ms. Shabana's 4th grade class collaborated and mentored students in Ms. Passoff's 2nd grade class. The 4th graders were great role models for the 2nd grade students and they worked together to create some phenomenal expedition products. The 2nd graders felt empowered by sharing their work and ideas with children in a higher grade. It has been a benefit to both classes and will continue throughout the school year! |
