Dear Amana Family and Friends,
Welcome to the new and improved edition of the "This Week at Amana" E-newsletter. We hope that you find this newsletter format to be as great, if not better, than the E-news of the past. This is our fourth month of issuing our weekly newsletter, and we are very excited about the progress and success that we are seeing as a result of this communication tool. Thank you to all our hard working faculty, staff and PIE volunteers for your ongoing contributions. It would not be possible without your input! Feel free to forward on to other family and friends. Enjoy! |

Amana Awarded Highly Competitive DOE Grant |

We have just learned that our school has been recommended for a one-year grant award of $90,000 from the Georgia Department of Education for facility improvements effective in January. Grant funding will be used to transform our rear gym into a useful and pleasant space for PE and after school sports, add state-of-the- art science lab stations to our middle school classrooms, improve our campus safety infrastructure, and other facility improvements. Amana received the 4th largest award (out of $100,000) among dozens of applicants from across the state! Congratulations to our Fund Development team for achieving this honor! |
Way to Go National Elementary Honor Society! |
The Amana Academy National Elementary Honor
Society students would like to thank the Amana community for their generosity. Members of the society collected 17 boxes of food that were donated to the North Fulton Community Charities to be distributed to needy families in our area.
Developing habits of service is central to the Amana philosophy. It is an honor to see our students demonstrate such high-level service at the elementary level!

Upcoming Showcase Nights |
Learning expedition showcase nights happening later this month will be confirmed in the coming days. See listing below for tentative dates.
In Expeditionary Learning schools, students produce high quality work. To do excellent work, students take their projects through multiple drafts and critique. Creating real work for real audiences motivates students to revise and to meet standards. In the process, they develop perseverance and realize they can do more than they thought they could. In portfolio presentations and public exhibitions, students articulate what they have learned and why it is important.
TENTATIVE DATES (teachers will send out final dates)
December 8th - Grades 6 & 7
December 9th - Grade 8
Dec 14th - Grades KG, 1, 2
Dec 16th - Grades 3, 4, 5

School Day Start Time Reminder |
School doors open at 7:30 a.m. We respectfully request that parents wait until that time to bring children to school as it is very chilly in the morning and we hate seeing our students waiting out in the cold. Thank you for your understanding! |

If the Fulton County Schools District closes on any day this winter due to weather conditions, Amana too will be closed. Please check WSB Channel 2, your email inbox and/or the Amana website for the latest updates on those days. |

Support Amana While You Shop Til You Drop |
With all the wonderful online sales going on this time of year, it is very easy to support Amana while doing your online shopping. Simply go to the Box Tops 4 Education Website and sign up to support Amana Academy. Once you do, head to the Boxtops Marketplace on that site and you will find tons of stores to choose from (including such popular stores as Barnes and Noble, Toys R Us, Petsmart, Walmart and more). Click on the store you were planning to shop at anyway, and Amana gets a percentage back in BoxTops for every $10 spent. You can still use whatever coupons or special offers you have as well. If you are going to shop online anyway, why not support Amana while you do? Don't shop online? Be sure to use your Kroger and Publix keytags and if you have a Target RedCard, be sure to designate Amana as your school of choice. Questions? Email Tracie Burr.

Reenrollment Deadline Fast Approaching | |
As you know, admission to Amana Academy is open to all students who reside in the Fulton County Schools District. In accordance with state and local regulations and because of space and enrollment limits, charter schools in GA give preference to existing students and their siblings. New students will be admitted only if space is available after waiting lists are exhausted. Parents of existing students who plan to have their child/ren attend Amana next year must submit an INTENT TO RETURN form to school in order to hold their spaces.
To secure your child's space for next year, we ask that you complete the online
recommitment form
before January 31st. Please note that in order to be fair to all our families and applicants, we strictly observe deadlines. Be sure to submit your INTENT TO RETURN via the website before the deadline as our open enrollment for the 2011-12 school year begins end of January and any unreserved spaces will be offered to new families. Please do not delay as our registrar's office has already received a great deal of interest for next year. We have many anxious families of children at all grade levels repeatedly calling to be placed on our waiting list! |
