From free Metaphrasis services during April's Chicago Diabetes Expo to interpreter forums to the new scholarship program for our Medical Interpreter Training, Metaphrasis is dedicated to giving back to the community. We hope to see you soon.

American Cancer Society Training - Tues, April 5th
American Cancer SocietyMetaphrasis is hosting a presentation on "Cancer and Its Effects on Patients" on Tuesday, April 5th, from 6:30 - 8:30pm at the Metaphrasis Intercultural Center.

Dr. John P. Hayes and Catherine Nwileh-Ibeagha (MSW / LSW) will discuss cancer basics as well as end of life issues, the impact of diagnosis on patients and families, and the support available via the American Cancer Society's Patient Navigation Services. Chicago Diabetes Expo

  • The EXPO is FREE and includes health screenings and cooking demonstrations, as well as talks by leading experts about diabetes management and prevention. Metaphrasis will be providing free interpreting services for Expo attendees. Reserve your spot today.

Diabetes 101: "Power Over Diabetes"
Metaphrasis Intercultural Center, Wed, June 1st - 6:30 - 8:30pm
  • Martin Nava, Associate Director of Latino Initiatives for the American Diabetes Association, will be presenting the first of several ADA trainings hosted by Metaphrasis. In this high energy session, Mr. Nava will cover everything you need to know to conquer and tame diabetes. This is GREAT information for interpreters who do medical interpreting. Pencil us in; registration for this event will open in April!

 

Col�n Receives Honorable Mention from Enterprising Women Magazine

In February 2011 Metaphrasis President and Founder Elizabeth Col�n was given an honorable mention by Enterprising Women Magazine on their Enterprising Women of the Year list. Next Interpreters Forum: May 21st
In January, 12 interpreters came together on a Saturday to share ideas, compile resources, and brainstorm challenging issues, including working with critically ill clients.  Their overwhelming feedback: "Let's do this again!"

The Personal Effects of Medical Errors
This month Dorland Health explored the effect of medical errors on patients in their Case In Point Weekly section. While the impact of medical errors is often measured in terms of financial cost, Dorland highlighted the need for case/care managers to serve as patient advocates in order to report and reduce medical errors.  Read the full article here

New Metaphrasis Scholarship Program

Always committed to giving back to the community, we are proud to announce our new Metaphrasis Scholarship Program. We will be providing one (1) scholarship per session for interpreters interested in enhancing their skills with Medical Interpreter Training. Those interested will be asked to complete a 500 word essay.
