SATTC Header
Greetings!

Regarding this edition of the newsletter. Where to start? What to include? What order of priority?

We have several things going on now - positive things. It's becoming more of a challenge to get words around everything. Which means Table Tennis is growing in our city by leaps and bounds (and spins and bounces).

When you read the sections about the training sessions scheduled for this fall, please realize we have also other training available on a one-to-one basis arranged with the TT coach of your choice - often on Saturday mornings but also at other times by personal arrangement throughout the week.

We recently added many new recipients to our email list, mostly one by one. Please know that, for whatever reason, if you don't want to receive future editions of this newsletter, you're welcome to use the "unsubscribe" feature at the bottom of this page -- that's why it's there.

Where's Cleto? -- at Table Tennis!
Cleto Rodriguez of the WOAI TV Early Morning Show Visits SATTC

A phone call came in to the Alamo Gymnastics & Family Fitness Center on a Monday morning. I happened to be nearby and the call was referred to me. It turned out to be Cleto Rodriguez of Channel 4 WOAI TV  asking if he and his crew could visit our TT club. Of course, I said yes.
Less than 48 hours later - after scrambling to recruit SATTC members willing to show up at 5 AM - we were "hit" with several live shots during a 2-hour program period.
. Below is a group scene. For more viewing, see the links below this photo.
Turned out to be a great way to begin our day . . . but no immediate consensus developed to open up TT play at 5 AM routinely. Not yet anyway..  ;-)

Four SATTC Coaches in School
Gloria Cadavid, Clark Nicholl, Edmund Lo, Toshi Nobe

The Austin table tennis club is hosting an ITTF Level 1 Coaching Course this week (Aug 13-17) at the Austin club home venue.

The course consists of 30 hours of on-site instruction, Monday through Friday. USATT National Coaching Advisory Committee Chairman Richard McAfee is conducting the course. Coach McAfee is a certified ITTF Course Conductor/Trainer. He has taught this course in several countries around the world. Ken Beauchamp, Head Coach of the Austin TT club, serves as the local organizer.

This course is designed for established coaches wishing to achieve ITTF-PTT Level 1 Certification as well as beginning coaches desiring to enter the profession. Those who attend can improve their coaching skills and in addition --  upon completion of course requirements (which include 30 hours of practice coaching after the seminar), will be certified as an ITTF Level 1 coach and also as a Level 1 Para Coach.

ITTF Certification is recognized worldwide, and ITTF Coaches are listed on the ITTF Website.

We appreciate Gloria, Clark, Edmund and Toshi for their willingness to give their time and efforts to improve their coaching skills - a significant benefit to our entire club.

We're Growing!
And doing our best to stay ahead of the curve (and the bar graph)
Attendance Graph 2009-July 2012
Earlier this year, we (SATTC club) were cruising along with TT attendance at about 520 players showing up each month, already significantly ahead of the 340 monthly rate of last year. This shot up to 700 in June, when we went to seven days a week, followed by a  surprising 875 in July.
Perhaps the heat drove athletes into our cool, air-conditioned, affordable, upscale facility.
Of course, we don't know yet whether the bubble of the past two months will taper off somewhat but we're certainly keeping an eye on it. This may be the SA expression of the national, international wave of increasing popularity of our favorite Olympic, recreational sport -- which for the past several years is growing at about 20% per year in the USA . . . . and already is at or near the top in terms of participation world wide.
San Antonio, here we come! Or, rather, here we are!
