A Woman with a Mission - An Invitation from Cindy

An open letter to girls of any age - regardless of the extent - or lack - of Table Tennis experience and skills:

Hi,

My name is Cindy. As a member of the board of the San Antonio Table Tennis Club, I'm making it my mission to bring more women to this great sport and, specifically, to our SA brand of Table Tennis.

I began playing regularly last summer and now I play about 4 - 5 times a week. It's great exercise, and not boring like the traditional exercise classes. Frankly, it's so much fun, it's addictive. I now get good exercise regularly and I am in better shape than I have been in years because of table tennis. The other members are a great bunch; they are friendly, helpful and as interesting as a mini-United Nations. People are always willing to give pointers and coaching advice to developing players. I myself often help train and orient newcomers, making them comfortable playing at the club.

The reason I am writing is to encourage you to register for our tournament. I feel that it is important that our club encourage female participation, and I realize that some women prefer to compete with other women. However our club president (the dastardly villain) has threatened to discontinue the women's event in future tournaments due to the low number of participants. I intervened and got him to relent if we could get more entries. So now I'm inviting you to register for the women's competition (as well as any other events you wish) in our tournament next month.

Click on the link next below for a downloadable tournament registration form. Also a link to a self-rating chart to help the tournament committee place you with someone of similar competition levels. Also a link to our schedule of regular weekly play in case you want to sign on for practice sessions - I'll be glad to assist you.

Regarding Cindy's note above . . .

One of my ancillary duties, when called into such ervice, is to serve our club as its CDVO (Chief Dastardly Villainous Officer). Just kidding!

Seriously, it became obvious over the past year that some of tournament events are under-supported relative to our popular handicap (point system event) and even more popular open singles event. The seniors' event is a bit shaky too but we will deal with it separately.

With regard to Cindy's appeal, the response from this CDVO now is moderated: If at least six females sign up, we will hold the event this time (Saturday, July 21). Significantly more than six and we will consider it also in future tournaments.

Of course, all females - girls of any age - are certainly eligible and welcome to participate in other events - such as the handicap, open singles (Sunday, July 22) and the doubles event. Plus, if age-eligible, you're entitled to compete in the youth and the seniors events too.

This time we're offering a doubles event on Saturday morning. So choose a doubles partner, male or female, and register for some spirited, competitive fun. If you don't have a doubles partner, we'll do our best to match you with someone on the spot.

In summary - and in support of Cindy, please know that you gals are most welcome regardless of whether or not we regularly schedule females-only tourney events.

Sincerely,

      Loren

  Club President (aka CDVO)
