Sunday Newcomers
Cub Scouts and Others
 | | Be prepared - Cub Scouts in action! |
Recently, during one of our weekly 5 PM Sunday newcomers session, SATTC hosted 16 table tennis wannabes, including a group of Cub Scouts from nearby Helotes TX who came by and earned their Scouting table tennis belt loops.
Also present, were several other newbies, including many who are well beyond Cub Scout age. It was a blast for al! - including our volunteer coaches.
These weekly on-hour orientation training lessons are free to all newcomers, maximum of three visits each. Since inception eight months ago, this program has hosted 85 newcomers and returnees to a total of nearly 150 free lessons. For details, click on:

SATTC Officers - 2012
Following up on last month's annual meeting, the SATTC / SATTF board of directors met January 8 and elected officers for calendar year 2012 as follows:
President: Loren Williams; Vice President: Gloria Cadavid; Secretary: Clark Nicholl; Treasurer: Ben Gurau
In addition to the officers, these Club / Foundation board members were present and participated in the January 8 meeting: Bruce Eichman, Edmund Lo and Eric Tijerina.
Andy Jimenez met with the board and presented a proposal to provide barbecue - sausage, hot dogs, burgers - at the Senior Games table tennis event March 24-25, intended to please lunch-time appetites in addition to generating funds for our club. The proposal met with approval and plans are under way regarding necessary permits. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |

Alamo Staff Party - TT Tourney
Ping Pong Party
 | |
Top view: Zaffer 1st, Keith 2nd
Bottom: Suhail 3rd, Michael 4th |
The scene: December 29, 2011 in the table tennis room at the Alamo Gymnastics & Fitness Center.
The cast: Two dozen Alamo staff members plus half a dozen members of the on-site San Antonio Table Tennis Club
The plot: Sixteen Alamo staff members vying for bragging rights in spirited table tennis play
The conclusion: The victorious finalists are pictured here; see also the chart below
Epilogue: The poor quality of the photography (don't blame Edmund for this!) does not do justice to the event. Perhaps better pix next time!

NEWS AND VIEWS
New Board Member
Please welcome a new member to our SATTC Board of Directors. Effective immediately, Cynthia (Cindy) Prindle has accepted appointment by the BOD to fill the unexpired term of Norman Everston who has resigned from the board. Cindy was a willing candidate during our annual election last month and thus a natural choice to fill the vacancy. Thanks, Cindy!
Thanks also to Norman who provided experience and vision during the past few years. For example, he initiated the Sunday newcomer sessions (see the related article, this newsletter). Now, due to other interests and a TT practice venue nearby his home, he expects to visit us from time to time as a tourney competitor or as an occasional daily drop-in player but not as a member of the BOD. You served his time. Thanks, Norman!
Wounded Veterans TT Clinic Responding to a request from Wendy Gumbert, regional sports manager for US Paralympics, several SATTC volunteers have signed up to assist any interested wounded veterans, for example wheelchair participants, to play and enjoy table tennis for a couple of hours on Friday afternoon, January 20, at the Audie Murphy Spinal Cord Injury Unit of the VA Hospital here in San Antonio.
There is a clipboard sign-up sheet at our club (SATTC) if you want to volunteer for this most worthwhile activity - which, if enough are interested, has the potential to grow into weekly sessions at our venue, possibly on Thursday evenings.
Schedule Change
Effective immediately, open play at our SATTC club venue will begin at 5:00 PM, rather than 6:00 PM, on Mondays and Wednesdays. Closing time will remain 10:00 PM.
This provides an extra hour of open play on each of these two days. The "key persons" (be sure to thank them) are willing to make this change, which should make it a bit easier for those affected by commuter traffic.
Practice Room
Effective immediately, the adjacent 3-table room here at SATTC is designated a practice area for all players and a dedicated area for intermediate / beginner play. You will still use your ID badge to line up for a specific table but you have the benefit of uninterrupted drill of your choosing - i.e, no challenges for the first hour of practice.
Open play / match play in the large, dedicated room is not affected by this change.
Puerto Vallarta Ping Pong?
We received an email invitation for anybody planning to spend time in Puerto Vallarta this winter to set aside some time to enjoy the recently expanded table tennis club - 12 tables plus a robot.
For details, click on:
Puerto Vallarta
The invitation is from Chris Smith who offers transportation from hotel / condo to the table tennis center.
