Nashville Singers Welcomes our Newest Member!
Bob Allen grew up in a family with a strong musical background and sang in a family gospel group as a child. He began playing the piano at nine years old and accompanied the family group as pianist during his teen years. He began his college years as a music major at Paris Junior College in his hometown of Paris, Texas and also studied musical theater at North Central Michigan College. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education at Texas A&M University-Commerce, majoring in voice with a minor in piano. In college, he sang with the Madrigal Singers, University Chorus and Chamber Singers and played piano in a jazz ensemble. Bob performed with The Young Americans song and dance company in residence in Los Angeles and on a national U.S. tour in a salute to the music of George Gershwin. Bob has worked as an entertainer on cruise ships for three cruise lines and at Busch Gardens theme park in Williamsburg, Virginia. As a Nashville-area resident, Bob has performed with Nashville in Harmony, a 100-voice community chorus and Collegium Vocale, a 24-member vocal ensemble at Vanderbilt's Blair School of Music. He sings in the church choir at Holy Trinity Community Church and is a member of Triligi, a men's gospel trio. Bob resides in La Vergne and works for Billboard magazine, covering the concert touring industry.
When asked what he liked most about his first Nashville Singers rehearsal, he replied, "Everyone's dedication to professionalism, musical excellence and diligent use of the time. Obviously, you all have a lot of fun, but you're also serious about what you're doing and spend the time wisely. It was a thrill to be around great singers!"
Doug Morrison, Sloan Yarborough, and Ric Domenico, sing a song with Bob Allen during the final phase of his audition.

Josh Moore Pays Us a Visit! Josh Moore visited our rehearsal on Thursday and spent the evening singing through the Christmas songs we are recording on August 25 and September 8. Josh sings in a few other choral ensembles in town, including the award-winning Music City Chorus. He also sings tenor with a quartet called 7th & Broadway, with members split between Nashville and Huntsville, Alabama. Josh posted on Todd's Facebook page, "I really enjoyed Nashville Singers rehearsal tonight. I had a lot of fun singing with you and all the other guys tonight. I was very impressed with the breadth of your repertoire...even though barbershop is still my first love ;-)"

Another Benefit of Membership! In preparation for our CD recording project, Nashville Singers is investing in our success by funding the cost of a free private vocal instruction (PVI) session with Grace Thomson for ALL 16 of our singers. The sessions are being held at Todd Wilson's house, unless other arrangements are made. Taylor, Harlan, Todd, and Rodney completed their sessions on Friday. Feedback has been very positive. Kudos to Celebration Coordinator Lenny Farmer for making sure we have tasty treats to mark these milestones, and to historian and photographer Tim Mullican for capturing some of the fun we have off the stage.

Singing with a Cold
If you're a singer with an important performance or recording session coming up soon, you may find this advice helpful. The following was compiled by Larry Wilson based on feedback presented by other singers on the Choralnet website.
Question: Are there things that singers can do to reduce the risks of coughing during performance?
Some of the suggestions included:
1. Drink lots of water, room temperature. keep a water bottle with
you at all times, and DO sip between pieces during a performance. I
know some people who swear by gummy bears to suck on! Avoid the
menthol cough drops. Vocal R-E-S-T. Not talking unless absolutely
necessary, and absolutely NO WHISPERING. Hot herbal tea with lemon juice, honey and whiskey helps me! A humidifier in the bedroom at night, and a muffler over the mouth and nose outside. Avoid at all
costs breathing in cold, dry air, which aggravates the tickle.
2. Cough drops. I like the Ricola Natural Herb ones, and have spent
WAY too many winter concerts singing with one tucked in my cheek.
3. Coughing is one of the few symptoms of cold/flu we can consciously control, which is GOOD because it is one of the most aggravating things we can do to a weakened voice. At this time of year, I like to distribute sheets about the singing mechanism and vocal health, and explain in rehearsal that coughing is the physical equivalent of slamming your vocal cords together, where as SWALLOWING (yes, the phlegm) actually soothes the throat. Most singers are hesitant to try this at first, as they feel coughing is more productive to loosening mucous, but swallowing will expedite their recovery.
4. Lot's of fluids and jolly ranchers
5. A great technique that I have used is eating apples. Many people
often have a bottle of water handy while they sing. Instead of having
this while you sing, try an apple. Every time you feel like taking a drink, take a bite of the apple. The apple itself is a great exfoliator and the
chewing motion creates more saliva as well.
6. Warm liquids, Halls, proper support and breathing can help reduce
coughing, but not eliminate it.
7. This may sound strange but Brach's starlite peppermints is what I
use and they seem to work well for the kids. I keep them on hand all
of the time.
8. I tell my singers who need cough drops in the performance to bring *unwrapped* cough drops in their pocket. At least when they need one they will not have to make noise to unwrap it.
9. I used the salt water gargle and low volume humming prior to
my concert on Saturday night and can report that I did not cough a
single time during performance.
